For what it's worth, I'm going to weigh in here. I'm a brand-new iPhone user - and I mean BRAND NEW - having had no experience with iPhones till this year (Jan, 2015). I bought two iPhone 5s', and BOTH had this ridiculous problem of not ringing! Not a pleasant introduction to Apple products! After struggling for WEEKS trying to find out what was wrong, I finally made an observation that may help solve this mystery.

My iPhone 5s' would not ring in ANY condition! Five bars of signal strength even was not good enough! But I finally discovered there is a correlation with the phones not ringing depending on how the other end DIALED the number! If the person is in the same area code as me, and they dial just my 7-digit number, i.e., "555-1234", then the iPhone WILL NOT RING. But if they dial the whole 10-digit number, i.e., 555-555-1234, that is, including the area code - the iPhone DOES ring! (This is, of course, after ensuring "do not disturb" is not active, the ringer mute switch on the side is not "on", etc.)

Just to be clear, my service is "Ting.com" (I'm a cheapskate), and the carrier is Sprint. I had this non-ringing problem since day 1 owning these phones but it does seem that my observation has solved the problem, at least in my case. Both phones ring provided the caller has dial the whole number of the phone, which includes the area code. This may be a "phone number migration" problem, because I did port both numbers from Tracfone to Ting. It's the weekend now, but I intend to call Ting (if that is possible, i.e., to talk to a human at Ting), and see it they are aware this ringing issue and how it seems to be affected by the use of an area code or not.

Sometimes the Iphone gets stuck in headphone mode. When it does this, the ringer and microphone both will revert to the headphone even if a headphone isn't plugged in. It happens if the mechanism in the jack is stuck due to condensation or pocket lint that gets in there.

Try blowing air in the jack using an air canister with a small tube. Once the lint is cleared, try plugging in and pulling out a headphone jack to free the mechanism. This worked for me on two iPhones that had the same symptoms. (Others have suggested using a toothpick to clean the jack, but I didn't need to do that and it could cause damage to the mechanism.)
