I cannot IMPORT MEDIA in 10.1

I recently upgraded to 10.1 and I can no longer import media. I trashed the application (and preferences) and reinstalled following Apple's advice, but the problem persists. When I click on import media I get the spinning beach ball and must force quit the application. Any suggestions?

ok, i figured out why my drive was getting the spinning ball of death. Turns out if you have a folder from your camera in the root directory of your external drive, Final cut will treat the entire device as a camera and try to scan for all compatible media. Of course the drive being 2 TB makes it take forever to do the scan! Once i moved the rogue directory to a subdirectory and out of the ROOT directory of the drive, Final cut correctly detects it as a normal drive and the dreaded hanging import spinning ball of death goes away.
