Choppy video playback with Airplay Mirroring

Hello. I just got myself an AppleTV. It seems to work well with the exception of video playback while mirroring from my Mac Mini (mid 2011). The video, for example, while trying to stream basic Hulu from my computer to the TV the video is just a tad bit choppy. While using the ATV with other things, I haven't noticed any other playback problems. Prior to this I was running a HD cable from the mac to the TV and had great playback so I am disappointed witht the choppy playback that I get with ATV. I got the ATV, because I figured it was time we get rid of the tacky look of the HD cable running from one room to the other to the TV. I don't want to have to run an Ethernet cable to the ATV form the router as that would defeat the purpose. Please Help! Here are my specs...

I running a MacMini (mid 2011), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5; 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3; Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB; OS X 10.9.1 - MAVERICKS

My router is a dualband NetGear WNDR3400.
My modem is a Motorola Surboard SB5101U.

Speedtest.net says my dowload speed is 9.82 Mbps; upload speed is 2.08 mbps; ping is 31 ms (I subscribe to 15 MBps with WOW.)

My router is just one small room away from my ATV. There appears to be 6 other networks going within my reach. I am not really sure what else is relevant so here is the following info: (I don't know how to change channel configurations and Band rates etc. - When I Googled this problem many ppl were discussing changing those things.)

Thanks. Let me know if you need more info or where else to start. I'm hoping I won't have to return this ATV...

I am experiencing virtually the same phenomenon. My AppleTV 3 and my Airport Express are 2.5 feet from each other. My iMac is across the room (about 17 feet) on a direct line of sight to the Airport Express. Nonetheless I get choppy playback when AirPlay mirroring from the iMac. Oddly enough, I can use AirPlay on my iPhone with NO choppiness at all. Prior to applying the 10.9.1 update I had better performance, so I'm very much beginning to think the problem lies in Mavericks. Something is slowing down the signal from the iMac back to the Airport Express..

I'd welcome any thoughts about this.

Thanks.

For me, I figured out when I lower the resolution on the playback on Hulu to 'low', for example, the choppiness goes away. Unfortunately, high resolution gives me the problem while mirroring, although it works fine on my Mac without mirroring. I called customer support and they had me check my network connections and download speed and check that my router, ATV, and OS software were all up to date. They were unable to give me any real solutions, only saying that it can't seem to handle streaming HD while mirroring. So, at least I am pretty confident that a better router or internet speed or nothing else will fix the problem at the moment. I am done looking for a solution for now. I feel I've exhausted all my options. I can always run my HD cable again to the TV if this continues to bother me...

Of course, if anyone still has a solution that may help please pass it on. Thanks.

Found my fix! It is to disable WMM on your router settings under QOS. Different routers have different ways of doing this. I found out how to do this here:

I wish Apple would have mentioned this in their manual or at least told their customer service people about this issue. Oh well, hope this helps some others.

FIx choppy video playback apple tv from macbook air mid 2011

For Linksys router:

1) Open your web browser.

2) In the Address Box at the top of the browser window, type http://192.168.1.1 and then click on Go, or press the Enter key on the keyboard. A window should appear in the center of the screen asking for your User Name and Password.

3) Leave the User Name box blank. Type admin in the Password box, then click on OK, or press the Enter key on the keyboard.

4) The Linksys Wireless Router Setup page should appear.

5) Click Applications and Gaming Tab

6) Click QoS

7) For WMM Select disabled

8) save

Hi, I have the same problem as you.

I bought a brand new Mac 21,5inch late 2013 2,7Ghz i5 8Gb ram Intel Iris Pro 1536. I did a fresh install of the Yosemite. I have and Apple TV 3, all updated. I had this problem with an old modem Linksys E1200 I thought it was due to speed and interference from other wifi signals so I bought a brand new Asus RT N56U due it has a lot of good revisions. I configured all my devices to work under 5Ghz, there is absolutely no one else in 5Ghz so the signal is completely clean. I check and the Qos is disabled, there is no other connection. I restart all my devices.

But still the problem continues. I also check the configuration of the HDMI output due before I had some improvements when I forced to RGB high or RGB low, however in this case is not working at all, I have the same problems.

Mi router is 5 mts away from mi apple tv and the mac and the signal is 4 of 5 in my apple tv and 5 of 5 on the mac. I have no other process running and still does not work properly.

I tried to use beamer to see movies I have on my hard drive however this is only a partial solution. Due I cant see Hulu or any other service that runs on normal Airplay.

Same as other I use airplay with Iphone 4, 4S, 5 and Ipad 2 and works perfect no chopping in any device, just from mac.

Im a new user on Mac and I'm very disappointed with this problems, I hope someone can help.

Same problem.

Mid 2011 iMac > ethernet connected to Cisco Valet M300 router > Wireless to ATV

Before it was very VERY choppy. Like unwatchable choppy. Frames would literally freeze for a second, like watching satellite TV in bad weather. I disabled WMM in QOS settings and it immediately made a world of difference but still nowhere acceptable to watch. My wife thinks I'm being picky but it is still noticeable by me and 4 other friends. As others have pointed out streaming services like Netflix work fine on ATV. I have yet to run direct ethernet from router to ATV, which may be my only hope, but it doesn't solve the underlying issue. Obviously there is some kind of bug in ATV that needs to be worked out or simply the device cannot handle mirroring HD video wirelessly which makes it about as useful as a nicely shaped doorstop. If I have to run an ethernet cable I might as well have saved $100 and ran an HDMI cable direct from my computer to TV.

Again, I really don't think there is a solution as simple as disabling WMM. At this point I'm just letting Apple know they need to go back to the drawing board.

I have had Apple TV for over 2 years now and have been using the AirPlay feature beautifully with iPad and iPhone. I recently purchased a couple of MacBooks and an iMac. I am now experiencing all of the problems you all are as well, but only with my computers. My iPad and iPhone still work with no trouble at all. I get the choppy, unwatchable picture when I attempt to mirror with my MacBook pro. My ATV is plugged into my router by ethernet cable and I use AirPlay over wireless. It is apparent to me that the problem is in the computer software and not with the routers, cables or signals. I think Apple needs to evaluate where the differences are in the computer software and the iOS software and make the appropriate corrections. I had hopes of using a similar set up to use when I teach or make presentations.

I have a TP LINK AC1750 Archer C7. I was having laggy video issues and I did solve it.

First, both Apple TV and my Macbook air 2014 (4GB RAM, the basic model) where connected to a 5G network. When I was airplay mirroring a video, I always had choopy/laggy video.

If I connected the Apple TV in the ethernet cable, no lag anymore.

What I did to resolve wifi laggy issues?

I connected the Apple TV to the 2.4G network, and Macbook to the 5G network. Problem fixed. 🙂
