M-Audio Fast Track USB and Logic Pro X

I wanted to share this tip in case anyone else has the same issue I had.

I attempted to use the Fast Track USB audio interface with Logic Pro X. It had worked in every version of Garageband since version 3, as well as older versions of Logic Express and Logic Pro, so I assumed it would work out of the box with Logic Pro X.

With it plugged in correctly, and my guitar connected to it, I added a new audio track to my project - ensuring the Fast Track was set as the input device, and input 2 was selected (input 1 is the XLR input on the device) - and enabled playback monitoring. There was no sound. Additionally, the button to enable recording was not present for the track. The same was true for every new track I added that used the Fast Track as the input device.

I tried everything: in Logic Pro X > Preferences > Audio > Devices, I toggled between the built-in input and the Fast Track; I restarted the software; I unplugged and plugged in the Fast Track, and I restarted the system. None of these worked. Then I had an idea.

In the Applications > Utilities folder on my Mac, I opened the Audio MIDI Setup app. This opened the Audio Devices window. I clicked on the plus at the bottom left and chose to Create Aggregate Device. I named this device by double-clicking the name on the left, then on the right I checked Built-in Input and Fast Track, taking note of which inputs belonged to the Fast Track in this new device (for me, inputs 3 and 4).

After restarting Logic Pro X, I chose this new aggregate device as my input device, chose input 4 for recording, and suddenly everything worked correctly.

The M-Audio Fast Track Pro is no longer an M-Audio product and is why it was updated by Avid. Though Avid owns M-Audio now (and Alesis), the Fast Track Pro is no longer on the M-Audio side, but Avid directily works with the Fast Track Pro now. I am not sure why some products stayed on the M-Audio side verses the Avid (or even Alesis), but Avid controls those things now since they own the two companies.

The M-Track Plus is a differnet product line and the M-Audio's division still has it, so the Avid drivers will not work with it. I tried with little success.

Sometimes people get mixed up with which product line is what because the name has a "Track" in it. The Fast Track Pro and the M-Track Plus are different product lines, so the Avid drivers for the Fast Track Pro will not work with the M-Track Plus.

The M-Track Plus usually does not need drivers for OS X and is why I suspect is not getting drivers. I recevied another email yesterday from the Logic X team and they said their developers are working on the M-Track Plus fix.

I was a little scared that M-Audio may discountinue the M-Track Plus since Avid updated other drivers in their line a few days ago and nothing on the M-Audio side, so I hope the Logic X team fixes the issue.

We will just have to wait....

I had the same but I finally fixed it.

I downloaded the latest driver of my fast track usb from avid website. Click latest one, then automatically download the file.

After that I tried it on logic pro x, select input 2, now I can get my guitar sound!

If you are using a different device,

search it here with your device and download the driver, then install it.

And another million points from me!

I was completely frustrated with the M-audio drivers and thinking about giving away my M-Audio "FIREWIRE Solo" and now you come up with THAT!

I installed the drivers for the "M-Audio Fast track USB" (don't ask...) and created a new device as described. Guess what? I can plug in a microphone or a guitar and record with garageband. Sound comes through standard speakers. Input in garageband is set to MONO 3 or 4 (Firewire Solo). Pick the one that works.

Thank you very much!!! That was awesone.

I have been using a TASCAM US-1800 and am experiencing the same essential problems, static or noise interference on recording, no audio for the output. I spoke with TASCAM today. They are awaiting APple to fix the USB audio problems introduced with Mavericks. They do have a beta driver, but it does not work on iMacs. Anyone heard anything new about this? I am using GarageBand, by the way.
