GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

Apple wouldn't cover mid 2010 Macbook pro under the current repair program, after two trips to the local apple store, all they can do is to apologise. Since Chinese New Year is coming and I don't want to waste my time and Uber fee, I found a third party to change my GPU, and it costed less than a 100 bucks. Here in Shenzhen, China , where all the apple products were made, tons of third party repair technicians on the market, telling me so many users had their MBP GPU swapped at their place. But Apple only covers 2011-2013 MBP. Shame on Apple.

hey there. I've been applying several of the fixes here including installing the older version of gfxcardstatus (2.1) and editing the configurartion.plist file to force the use of the computer's memory instead of the GPU's. (my crashes have all shown up as read errors)

I've recently had my nvidia card replaced at a local repair shop here in vancouver canada, as well as upgrading my HD to a SSD. At first, the panics came back pretty quickly, and then the shop redid the soldering using higher heat. they have a chip soldering machine. It was working fine but started getting panics again after a couple days. all they did was install another of the same card. I'm curious what card you had yours replaced with, supernovasia. was it another nvidia GeForce GT 330m? my repair guy is suggesting downgrading my card to one with half the ram (from 512 to 256). thoughts? Is there a different GPU that can be installed? He's also suggesting I stop using the 2nd display, which kind of ***** but I'd be willing to do if it means my machine works for my music software.

I typically use an external 40" TV display connected to the mini dv port for watching video streams and such... it seems to me that the usage of this external display has contributed to the card's failure. my problems began on snow leopard but increased when I recently updated to yosemite.

I got the same GPU chip, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB, replaced here in Shenzhen,China. But I didn't get a chance to plug it to an external display. However, the technician ran a 3D CG on my mid 2010 MBP after the replacement, everything went smoothly and the sudden panic and reboot never came back.

Maybe try some other repair shops in BC. Any progress, please post here. Good Luck

Just wanted to post briefly to share my experience, because I feel that Apple's handling of this issue is really disingenuous.

I recently had my logic board replacement covered for free after persistently escalating the issue up to a call centre manager. I had initially taken my computer into the Apple Store (Eaton Centre Toronto) and was told by the first person I spoke with that they they could not help out because the replacement program had ended, and that I would have to pay $700. I asked to speak to his manager, who then told me that he "understood my concern" about the fact they did not alert customers that the replacement was being offered. He said he could offer the logic board replacement for $350. I said no thanks, and went home and called the Apple customer support call centre. The first person I spoke with there again said they could offer nothing better than $350 and that their "hands are tied". After escalating the issue with the call centre to a manager, I FINALLY seemed to reach someone who had the authority to comp the replacement. They stated that they agreed the low visibility of the replacement program was unfair for customers, and they made a note on my account that the logic board should be replaced for free. I took it back to the Apple Store and had my computer back home with a new logic board in 5 days for no charge.

I would encourage everyone with a faulty logic board to make an attempt to call Apple customer support and speak to a manager before you pay anything for the replacement. I should also note that, among the many things I pleaded with various people along the way was that I previously had Apple Care for my Macbook (though long expired by now). I don't know if this made any difference or not, but I would also mention that if you had previously purchased it.

Good luck!

in my experience, [previously bought Apple care for this Mac] makes a BIG difference in what apple MAY be willing to do for you in unusual circumstances.

Another thing that seems to sometimes make a difference is if your Mac appears "well cared for", not beat up.

It is important to be calm and businesslike throughout the process -- users who yell or threaten to sue everybody are seen as never able to be Happy Customers, so all they get shown is the exit door.

****. Yeah the first guy I spoke with was great and really understood me and what I had to say. The second upper guy basically said my computer is too old and it sounds like it's failing because it's old.......😮

Oh well. I'll buy another Macbook pro when the new lineup comes out in a few months. I'll install an older OS on this machine and see if that helps it out and maybe keep it or sell it to someone who wants a cheap mac.

Apr 9, 2016 8:42 PM in response to cfbbaer

I too have had numerous kernel panics for the last couple months. I've reformatted the drive, reinstalled software to no avail. Happened again yesterday and this is the panic report if that helps; can anyone cypher this? Looks like a lot of similarities to cfbaer's report. I'm going to contact Apple & see if there's any assistance available there.
