GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

Thanks for your reply. That program ended March 2015, it *****. They have a repair program going on on their web, which only covers 2011, 2012,2013 MBP. though 2010 MBP shares the same GPU problem. I asked Genius to ran the test, and mine says FAIL. Only solution, pay $700 for a logic board swap. Shame on Apple on this issue ! I will never trust Apple as I did before.

Well, for a while there, with the suggestions I made, it made no difference. It was crashing every night, when I came home, and I would bring it back from sleep and it would just crash.

Now, I just installed the new El Capitan update, and it seems to be more stable. I also did run the new Onyx as well, and so far, everything seems to be quiet.

The problem had been described before - you close the lid, it would go to sleep, you come back after a while, open it, play with it, and after a couple minutes from awake, it would go blank.

I literally just installed the latest Software Update, and it does have a security improvement for GPU memory handling, so may be that fixed it? You should download the latest and see what happens.

How du you all use gfxCardStatus? Dynamic or ... only?

I have a mid 2010, MacBookPro 6.2,with Yosemite 10.10.5, with the same problem, GPU panic.

I use gfx but with "...only" marked and the automatically swithing turned off on "energy settings" in SystemSettings. Gfx v.2.3 will always swith to "dynamic" if I choose "integrated" and open PathFinder. Then I manually have to swith to "Discrete Only" if I don't want my Mac to reboot.

This settings go back after rebooting, so I have to remember doing this settings every time. It feels like I having a Windows computer again ;( .

But this settings is working without reboots even with external monitor, with or without power cable. But now I'm thinking on upgrade to El Capitain and would like to have some feedback from those who already have El Capitain and this bad video card from NVIDIA or/and this bad motherboard from Apple

Not to be the bearer of bad news but if you have one of the defective motherboards your only sane course of action is to get the board swapped out. You can fight with Apple all you want and maybe they will cover it (or partially cover it). It cost me $300 after lots of back and forth but I now have ZERO problems. Go to the Apple Store and there is a test they can run (for FREE) that will tell them immediately if your board if one of the defective ones.

Good Luck!

You need to use V2.1. However, the permanent fix is to swap the logic board or the GPU itself. Apple wouldn't cover mid 2010 Macbook pro under the current repair program, after two trips to the local apple store, all they can do is to apologise. Since Chinese New Year is coming and I don't want to waste my time and Uber fee, I found a third party to change my GPU, and it costed less than a 100 bucks. Here in Shenzhen, China , where all the apple products were made, tons of third party repair technicians on the market, telling me so many users had their MBP GPU swapped at their place. But Apple only covers 2011-2013 MBP. Shame on Apple.
