GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

Apple replaced my logic board. It was due to the upgrade and the new load it presented to the dual GPUs, that was my case. The old NVIDIA chip set was flawed and could not handle 10.9. It was a lot of talking, even with the upper echelon, but they served me well in the end. Thanks Apple and thanks for the Genius Bar service. What PC would ever provide you with such a 1-to-1 service?🙂

I have tried the update from Nvidia but no change.
Now using GFX program I have minimal problems, I have learnt to change from Nvidia to Intel when GFX switches and most of the time it does the trick. Except that since the last upgrade and the new version of Photos as soon as Photos open everything crashes again. Is there a way to go back to the old app?

So I, like many of you have a MacBook Pro 6,2 Mid 2010 with the Nvidia GeForce GT 330M and Intel integrated video card with the GPU panic issue.

I’ve read many threads and comments where the fault in this laptop becomes unbearable with successive updates of the OS. I myself am currently running Yosemite.

I like many of you have turned to the GFXCardStatus app to help keep the MacBook on one card or the other. Generally, I use my system 75% of the time at my desk at work with it connected to an external monitor. Trying to use the MacBook with both the external and builtin LCD screen at the same time is just asking for trouble and GPU Panics all day every day, even with GFXCardStatus ver 2.3 installed.

However, if I opt to only use the external monitor with the MacBook LCD closed which forces the system to run on the Nvidia card only, I can work all day every day for weeks/months on end without a GPU panic. So I tend to think the problem is not with the actual Video Cards but with the process that activates one over the other for if I force the Intel card on when just using the Macbook LCD it works fine until I want to use something like Aperture and then it’s a GPU Panic.

So using trial and error, on my Macbook pro only I set up to try a few things to see if I can keep the Nvidia card running all the time on the Macbook without an external monitor leveraging the GFXCardStatus application to keep an eye on which card was in use.

So as I said earlier, using the Macbook’s own LCD even with it set to Intel or the Nvidia card would still not negate the occasional GPU Panic. Also in reading many of the comments here and on other sites devoted to this issue I’ve not seen any way to control the selection of cards in any way other than with the GFXCardStatus application. My experience on my Macbook is such that I can never get any further than 90 minutes to 2 hours using just it’s own LCD screen before I get a GPU panic. Using an external monitor with the LCD closed and an external keyboard and mouse gets me 100% GPU panic free operation.

About a week ago I was thinking about this problem and thought, what if I connect my Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adaptor to the Macbook, but not connect the monitor to the adapter. Just leave it hanging like a dongle off the side of the Macbook. Open the lid and go to Energy Settings and turn off the Automatic Graphics Switching (as it is always on after each reboot or full power on). Then use GFXCardStatus to make sure the Nvida card is the one running and choose Discrete Only from it’s menu offerings.

I am very pleased to report that for me, working in this fashion has allowed me almost a full week of GPU Panic free operation using just my LCD Screen. I never use my Macbook on battery so battery life is not an issue for me and the unit performs great so far. I should also note that I stopped using Safari as my browser as well as Chrome as I found the level of GPU panics when using those browsers was substantially higher then if I used Firefox, which is currently what I'm using now.

I thought I would share this configuration info for those of you who have a Mini DisplayPort to DVI / VGA adapter who might like to try it as well and report if the problem of the GPU Panic goes away for this style of configuration.

It’s no fix for using both the LCD and an external monitor at the same time, but its better than what I was having to do and just use an External monitor, keyboard, trackball with my Macbook at all times. I’m finally mobile again!!

Best of luck to everyone!

It works! My Macbook Pro now can use discrete (NV330) gpu. Thanks so much.

Re: GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2in response to cfbbaer

Hello guys,

what fixed the issue of "recurring GPU panics at random times" for me was to alter the Configuration.plist file located in "/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphi cs.framework/Resources/".

Just copy that file to the Desktop and edit it with XCode.

Where it sais "ForceSessionDrawsVirtualFramebuffer" change "NO" to "YES"

-> This setting will force the GPU to write data only to the main memory instead of using the VRAM.

Note: i assume this fix only works for GPU panics caused by read access failure (see what your panic dump says).

Note: do not use these settings if you're low on memory.

Hope that helps some of you folks

OK, ladies and germs, I have had the same problem.

Until recently, I never knew this MBP 6,2 mid-2010 would be a clunker, but it had shown problems before, but not like this. I too, have had the GPU panic, the screen just goes blank, it gives me the grey screen message that the computer has problems and restarts.

It had been doing it for a while now, ever since I upgraded to El Capitan, but not before.

Before, it used to slow down and freeze and not much more, but definitely would be slow in running a few things. Now it would just go blank. I used to have to run Permissions repair all the time as the same problem kept coming up - but never a mention of the GPU panic in any of the messages. But obviously there's something there, and since I upgraded to El Capitan, it got worse, to this point of going blank and restarting all the time.

The other day I decided to try the various methods mentioned here, but I'm not a programmer nor am I technical enough to start messing with Xcode and such, but I decided to just run ONYX and see if that would help. http://www.titanium.free.fr/onyx.html

Instead of just running the Automation, I decided to carefully run each segment one by one, making sure I cleaned everything including the Error logs and so on.

I then ran Automation again to make sure, and then let it restart.

Voila. So far, I have had no problems for an entire day. Strange, isn't it? And for two days now it's been quite stable and behaving. I haven't had to be really careful and jumpy that it might go blank while I was doing something important. I guess the new Disk Utility doesn't do enough.

I thought I would contribute my 2cents.

I'll report back if it happens again though.

Dec 28, 2015 10:30 AM in response to cfbbaer

OK. I spoke too soon.

But I think I found a glitch.

It happens only when I have STICKIES open. I use Stickies down the left side of the screen, I have several stickies with some notes, and when I have them open and then I try to use the notes while I am also on Safari, it crashes. But when I have Stickies off, as I am on Safari like I am now, the computer works like normal. Weird, isn't it? I had noticed it before, while I would be looking at some notes it would crash, but I clearly noticed it this time for sure, as I had not opened Stickies since I last wrote on here about what I thought I was experiencing.

So there must be something wrong here with El Capitan, Stickies and the GPU glitch.

Jan 19, 2016 3:51 PM in response to 24Golfer

I've had the same issues on my Macbook pro 2010

Funny thing is, I didn't have an issue on mavericks.

I noticed this issue a few times on yosemite but chalked it up to it being an old machine. One day I was prompted to upgrade to El Capitan and I made the mistake of doing so. After the upgrade I couldn't use the laptop for a few minutes before the whole screen just blitzed out.

I went through many calls with apple support who told me to check the genius bar and ask them about the replacement program which has expired but maybe they can do something for me if it is a failed graphics card. I brought the laptop into the apple store and they ran a few tests and they confirmed that it is a faulty graphics card with a smile. They then basically told me that the replacement program was over and I was kind of SOL with a smile. The genius and manager said that I should always check to see if there are any recalls in the future and that its not worth paying to fix the laptop, I should just buy a new one instead.

In short, Apple will not fix my laptop which had a known hardware issue but didn't exhibit any problems until I got prompted for an update because I didn't check the forums in time for their replacement program.

Apple makes some really great products but this policy just didn't strike me as very fair and the whole experience was very negative and extremely time consuming. Will I still buy apple products? yes, I probably will as I am invested in their ecosystem but you know what? I probably wouldn't try to sway others to go apple as I have in the past.

Jan 24, 2016 4:18 AM in response to andyappel

$300? how did you get this done at this rate? They asked me to pay $700 barefacedly for a logic board swap for my Mid 2010 MBP, at the same time they have that free Logic Board swap program for MBP 2011, 2012, 2013 going on the website. It's ridiculous that the problem of Mid 2010 GPU is the same as the ones that happened with the 2011,2012,2013 MBP. So so unfair for users who purchased mid 2010 MBP !!! Apple, please value users who have confidence in your products and take guts solve Mid 2010 MBP's GPU problems.

Hey, I went through the same ordeal. So unfair to users who purchased Mid 2010 MBP. It's ridiculous that the problem of Mid 2010 GPU is the same as the ones that happened with the 2011,2012,2013 MBP, and they have that free Logic Board swap program for MBP 2011, 2012, 2013 going on the website NOW! Apple is bullying customers for the moment on this issue ! So disappointing, Apple !

I took the MacBook to my local Apple Store in Rockaway, NJ where they told me that Apple has a flat rate "depot" repair program. They send your MacBook out and for a flat rate they repair it. They replaced the "Logic Board 2.66 GHz" and "Display Clamshell Glossy Hi-Res" for me all for the one flat rate of $300. Not sure if the program still exists as I had mine repaired in May 2014.

Good luck. Fight with them. Tell them if they don't fix it you'll go back to using your Windows laptop. After all it was Apple's screw up.
