GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

Hi, it´s very interesting what you just said, and so the price you got your Mac!

So, i´ve been working with Mavwericks for almost a month by now, using gfxCardStatus 2.1 with NO KERNEL PANIC AT ALL! I´m really happy for it. I have to tall you we work on this machine by hours, using Illustrator and Photoshop (and another design/photo editing programs) Also getting into internet (Safari) YouTube etc. VLC, hd movies etc. Chrome really made this problem worst before using gxf, safari does the work fine, so chrome is not needed by now. The mac is closed, sleeps, gets back on with no problem. So, I think this is the best solution (that is if you don´t want to pay extra cash for a new motherboard).

What I´ll try is to use only Nvidia card, I read that in here, so, the problem seems to be the "switching" and not the card. SO! I´ll try that, same use and stay in touch. Thanks for being on!

Best wishes, J.

I think it depends on the mood of the store, too. My daughter had a swelling battery issue on her MacBook. It made the track pad not work. This was a known and documented issue with that computer. When the Apple store (in Birmingham, Alabama!!) said it would cost her $300 I got really angry. Rather than argue with them, i had her bring it to me in Chicago. I brought it in, no questions asked, they fixed it. Sometimes I have to ask for the manager, and if that doesn't work, call their manager.

Apr 18, 2015 10:16 PM in response to Johnnie2610

Yeah, since I paid less for my entire Macbook than what someone else mentioned that Apple charged them to fix a widely known defect in these machines, you can see that I was not about to give a company like Apple any more of my money to fix what they should have fixed the entire time. But I have to say from reading your experience, I'm getting the impression that this problem is different for different people with, perhaps, different versions of Macbook hardware. For example, no way would gfxCardStatus 2.1 work for me on my Macbook 2011, and no way would the video card display problems disappear under Mavericks.

Mavericks was the worst for that, for me. What I finally did to stabilize the problem was install Snow Leopard. This was not as easy as it sounds, as I tried one version after another of SL, all of which failed to install. I finally had to beg the techs at Apple to send me the original install DVD's, and that was the only way I found to get Snow Leopard on this machine. Once I gave the Macbook what it started out with, it started to calm down more. I can't say it has never rebooted since, but I can say that under Snow Leopard and with the older version of gfxCardStatus, the sudden restarts and far and fewer between now, than they ever were under Mountain Lion, Mavericks or (urgh.... I hate to even mention the name of this dud...), ..."Yosemite".

Hope that helps!

So I have one with Yosemite using gfxCardStatus 2.1 appears to fix it, I went to the Apple Service Center and at least in Helsinki is still free of charge the repair but since I have it second hand there is no receipt to show there. Right now I'm using it normally and there has been no crashes for 1 day but I can't go back to ML because I'm using Xcode 6.3 or SL for that matter. I'm not happy but at least I'm functioning.

I may have just found the solution to our GPU panics. Before divulging, let me say that I highly value Apple products having been a user since the 80's. The technology is really stable but the politics and capitalism need to keep the consumer in consideration. Upgrading is a game, and consumers should be careful if they are going to play it. Having said that. I own a MacBook Pro mid-2010, 2.4 GHz Intel Corei5, 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3, running 10.9.5. My MBP was installed with 10.6 and because I use a few heavy design and CAD programs I needed to upgrade to 10.9.5. Immediately upon upgrading my MBP started GPU panics, and they got persistent and more frequent (last week 2/day!! or anytime I returned from my screensaver! I searched for solutions: tried Gfxcardstatus, didn't work, tried reinstalling 10.9.5, didn't work. Couldn't run a diagnostics from AHT because of the upgrade, finally got to the Genius Bar. They ran the AHT VST and such and it failed, as I expected. I was offered to either PAY UP 600usd for new logic board, (would have been my second replacement, the SD card slot never worked for me, and my Superdrive has also failed, won't read or write) or I could have the whole MBP sent away for 300usd and have everything replaced. I left. So, here's what I found after being persistent, and refusing to pay again. Note: These computers are highly resilient and stable, soft and hardware(though these tend to be from sometimes unreliable vendors I think, like my mitsubishi superdrive that for some reason lost all laser power!?! that should be a free fix indeed). These MBP have the capacity abad durability to last at least 20+ years with the proper care and maintenance. So I went to the NVIDIA website to try a firmware update and voila!!! The update has worked for the past two days and NOT ONE GPU PANIC! HELLO! I was a bit nervous to talk to soon, but I highly suggest those of you who are having this issue, try the firmware update! Good luck!

P.s., you'd think Apple would know this and tell you right?, can I be a Genius at your Bar Apple?!?

May 9, 2015 11:26 AM in response to FriedFesh

Hi FriedFesh, Apple change my logical board for free in Brasil (I'm lucky!), but I have experienced some troubles with my graphics, the colors of some gradients look spotted with some yellow colors, I already try to fix this with ColorSync and calibrate the screen by my self, but nothing works pretty well.

I was thinking that the problem is with the NVIDIA, and than your response came by email! So I try to find the driver but I can't find it in the NVIDIA website, I don't know why. So you can send me the link to download it please??

Thanks!

May 9, 2015 4:51 PM in response to FriedFesh

Sorry, I was afraid I spoke too soon. Tried to use iMovie and 3 GPU panics in a row, immediately after iMovie rebooted!

Apple is very aware of this issue, but discontinued its recall for people like us. I'm lost with ideas, and will consider downgrading back to 10.6.8...

May 11, 2015 8:00 AM in response to FriedFesh

Hahahaha...Palmeiras! The Brazilian Giant Green! =P

Thanks for the links, I will try downloading it, even if you already say that the panic became to happen. I was thinking that the best solution is to downgrade too. For me the panics are not a problem anymore, because I change the logical board, but the colors on my screen are too many spotted.

Good luck!
