GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

I would not recommend that procedure as a fix for 2010 MacBook Pro 6,2.

If it fails the VST test, it is not a soldering problem, and will not improve with this treatment.

As I said though, part of the service is replacing the GPU if required. I'm just curious as to why you think that wouldn't work. I don't have stock in the place or anything.

I do not think this service replaces the graphics chip for FREE, and I do not think they will find the defect. The only diagnostic that finds the Latent Defect is in Apple stores.

I think you would get an excellent re-soldering and be back to exactly where you started, with your wallet US$129 lighter.

But I DO think this is worth considering for 2011 models that are being difficult. I own two 2011 models, one early and one late 2011, and neither has show these sorts of problems -- knock on wood.

It's not free, it's $30 - $45 like I said. I don't want to argue about this. It seems to me though that a potentially viable route is to go have the VST test done, then send it to this guy for a $175 repair. I have one of these machines, and if I had to get it fixed I could see $175 but not $600.

If you TELL the Guy up front to Replace the VST - FAILED graphics chip and pay him for that, I think it could be a great service.

Some users have been able to get an Apple Store Manager to allow them to have "Depot Repair" of their MacBook Pro 2010. For under US$350, send the MacBook out to a Repair Depot for about a week, and it comes back with ALL listed defects fixed for that flat rate.

miXania, for sure it will help you avoiding the GPU NVidia card, but you won't be able to use an external monitor, or use it but with chances of new panics. Since I stopped using the NVidia card I have no more GPU panics.

But you need to use that specific version that I shared in this post (or maybe an old one) .

Since I don't speak for Apple, my answer is a wild-*** Guess and will not count for anything. What counts is what the store says.

The replacement of the individual motherboard in the store is usually an overnight to two-day process, if parts are already available. You pay the fairly expensive cost of the part. So a straightforward repair in the store is likely to run on the order of US$750, but be fairly quick.

If the Store Manager will allow your MacBook access to Depot Repair (more likely but not assured in the case of the 2010 MacBook Pro 6,2 with the Latent Defect) the repair may take a week (or more if parts are not available) but cost closer to US$350. Every item on an attached "Laundry List" of perceived problems will be addressed for that flat rate.

For any Apple Repair, your MacBook Pro must appear in a standard configuration [in particular, no substituting SSD in the DVD-Reader bay] to be serviced AT ALL. You risk having it returned to you unrepaired (after a delay) if it is not standard.

The other alternative for the 2010-model's VST-FAILED graphics chip is to have the chip REPLACED (not just Re-Soldered) by a third-party service such as the one linked above. NB> Re-Soldering alone will not solve the 2010-model's problems.

Hello all, sorry to add to this thread, but I have a related question. Using that utility on my MacBook finally let me get to the Mavericks installer. But if I use that utility to set it to non-nvidia graphics always, does anyone know if that will also set it to non-nvidia graphics for when i boot into Windows via BootCamp?

I'm not sure if that utility changes a BIOS-type setting that all OS's read, or if it just sets something specifically in OSX.

If you're talking about gfxcardstatus, it's only going to work on the Mac side. I'm not sure what you do about Windows. It doesn't solve the problem anyway, it just lessens it.

Hello guys,

what fixed the issue of "recurring GPU panics at random times" for me was to alter the Configuration.plist file located in "/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphi cs.framework/Resources/".

Just copy that file to the Desktop and edit it with XCode.

Where it sais "ForceSessionDrawsVirtualFramebuffer" change "NO" to "YES"

-> This setting will force the GPU to write data only to the main memory instead of using the VRAM.

Note: i assume this fix only works for GPU panics caused by read access failure (see what your panic dump says).

Note: do not use these settings if you're low on memory.

That is an interesting different suggestion. I don't think I have ever seen that suggested here before.

The chips with the Latent Defect cannot survive the unrelenting switching back and forth. It does make sense that writing to the screen buffer in RAM would be more reliable.

Does this seem to make the problem a little less prominent, or is this a "near-cure" ??

I do think that my fix could be a solid cure because even if you can thoroughly access the 256 megabytes of VRAM (MBPro mid 2010), it still won't give you any advantage over using the computer's main memory. Even if access to VRAM might be faster as accessing the main memory. (I hope you get what I'm trying to point out)

I've even tested playing Diablo III whilest having this setting active and it didn't throttle gameplay. The only difference was the memory consumption (not far more than before).
