GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Are you sure you were having the same problem? This only applies to the mid-2010 15" model with the Nvidia card. Panics can be caused by any number of things.

Yes that's the one, unusable on Mavericks. Error log mentions GPU related panic reason.

OK. Other models can have GPU panics. The proposed fix would only apply to the 6,2 model.

Can you please confirm that ALL THREE of these conditions are true:

1) your 15" MacBook Pro is the 6,2 2010 model

2) Your MacBook Pro has FAILED the VST test, and you have decided not to Repair it

3) The suggested fix does not work for you in Mavericks

That's OK. I am just trying to correlate the issues surrounding the .plist change as a "fix".

So it is possible the failure you see is NOT the one caused by the Latent Defect. It could be caused by an ordinary graphics chip failure.

If that is the case, the .plist change could be a non-fix for your problem, but still be a fix for those with the Latent defect, whose Macs failed the VST test.

I did not have any panics since applying the fix. Just to point out again, this only works for you folks who have a read/write access failure noted on their panic log.

I've edited this file in root user mode so that it would actually save my changes.

I used TextWrangler and changed the /false to /true which i assume is the equivalent thing to do in the XML.

So far it hasn't crashed again. If you don't hear from me again, it worked!

Mavericks 10.9.2 - Mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" - same thing was happening, thought it was something video card related. 😟

My last system (also a 15" MacBook Pro) had to have a logic board replaced for video getting burned out eventually. I hope this isn't a sign that this thing is on its way out - it's been a great system!

I have a mid 2010 MBP, 15", 6,2 running Mavericks 10.9.2 also. I have been trying numerous fixes and workarounds. I've taken my machine to Apple twice. On the first try they replaced the HD free of charge, on second try they told my the HD was bad again. They did test the NVIDIA graphics card and told me the one in my Mac was not in the problem series. I replaced the HD and upgraded my RAM myself at the same time. The overall performance of the machine are much better, but there was no difference what so ever in the kernel panic frequency.

I started using GFX card status to force it to stay with the Intel graphics, and applied this fix. My kernel panics are less frequent, but it still crashes occasionally.

After this file edit, there doesn't seem to be any more stability. I'm still getting random frequency crashes. I can use it for hours with/without an external monitor and the frequency is still random. Might crash soon off of fresh boot, might be deep into a work session.

The only 'stability' seems to be the Intel chip via GfxCardStatus.

Huge bummer. I've just taken to saving work in progress more often :/

Hi Paul, are you using the old GFXCardStatus version? Because just the old ones maintains the Intel video card selected all the time.

Whelp boys, mine official kicked the bucket last week. The gfxcardstatus fix was working pretty well for a while, I was getting maybe 1 or 2 crashes a week as opposed to several every day. All was fine, I shut my machine to put it to sleep, opened it two hours later, and it was totally dead. Didn't charge, turn on, anything. Brought it in to Apple and the said the logic board needed to be replaced. Got the flat rate repair for 310, now I'm just waiting to get it back. Anybody know if there's any kind of warranty on the repair?

Unfortunately mine died before I was able to try out this new plist method, interested to see how that works for people though.

I think the GFXCardStatus didn't really solve the problem in Maverick. Intel Graphics is better solution but not the best.

I reverted it back to Mountain Lion, problem is gone! (At least 90% of time so far)

Just don't waste time on tweaking here and there, it is an hardware issue, unless you replace the logic board for around $600 you have no way to use Maverick with 6,2 smoothly. (If you brought Apple Care and expired, you can try to argue with lower price).

I checked eBay, people are selling 6,2 logic board for more then that price, and you cannot garrentee that is the new revision or old.

My conculsion is 1) if you don't want to spend money, downgrade to ML. 2) Spend $600, it is still cheaper than buying a new one (unless you want a new one).

Thanks a lot for your replies. I'm using GFXcardstatus version 2.3 (the newest one). It seems to help, but isn't a fix. I'll try reverting to ML and an older version of GFXcardstatus and see if that helps.

We know that will be somewhat temporary too. As other apps are updated they will increasing require newer operating systems to load or function properly. I don't want to spend 600 to fix a known problem and this is leaving a very bad taste for Apple products. I'm a pretty avid fan (iPhones, iPads, etc), but it seems Mr. Jobs old slogan, "it just works" has sort of gone to the wayside.
