GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

It was my first thought about "it just works" think, and it was my argument with the genius bar, trying to get it fix for free (under "Quality program").

Because Maverick came out a little over 3 years after the MBP6,2 first introduce, my argument was the "quality program should begin when they discover the issue, not from the date they introduce the product if you know what I mean.

But then, if you are on the Apple side, your computer has been used for 3 years, and it was good with the old OS, they cannot guarrantee work (due to S/W & H/W) just like the one you buy brand new (e.g. Powernap feature, Airplay, BT 4.0), the most unlucky thing is our 6,2 Graphics card is "not compatible" (let's put it this way) with Maverick. If this happens on Windows PC, you just go out and buy a new Graphics card, or even buy a new laptop that supports it. You simply can't because of Apple's AIO design, it sounds a lot but compare it to a 3 year machine that treat you so well, and because you want to upgrade to newer OS and it will cost you $300-600 to "pratically" buying a "new computer" (or "new logic board"). The replacement price Apple set is not a crazy price that will force everyone to buy a new one, its more or less worth it.

My situation is, I lowered to ML without fixing it, and gave it to my wife for light use. And I brought an iMAC myself. everybody wins!

Apr 30, 2014 10:39 AM in response to PDCarter

I agree with using it for 4 years and replacing. I may go that route later this year too.

Other than this problem (it didn't happen until ML), I've had outstanding support and service from apple. I'm upset over this, but do understand some of the logistics. I can see them not supporting any HW forever. This machine is still usable, its more of an annoyance than a crisis. My best hope was to find a fix until I decided to upgrade, not have someone else (Apple) decide that for me.

Hi Joe, I'll do better, I'll share the version that I'm using.

Yesterday I used the Macbook Pro for five continuous hours, without any problem. I really believe that the problem is solved, or at least, reduced, because I'm not able to use my external monitor anymore.

In order to work, you need to use the "integrated only" option. And, again (sorry) I'm not with my Macbook here now, but I remember that you need set one option that will automaticaly restore your preferences when the system reboots, something like "remember my last settings".

You can download the gfxcardstatus version 2.1 in the link below:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=A9C9EF5F79924761%218546

Please, tell me if it helps.

Later, I'll write an article about that, in order to try helping other unlucky guys like us :(.

P.S

Thanks Cody Krieger and contributors for their excelente work at http://gfx.io/

I'm replying to my own message just to reuse it.

This version is working fine for me and after that, I never got any gpu panic anymore.

Oberdan wrote:

Hi Bunlo, I'm suffering from the same situation here with my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 15" i7. I totally agree with you, Apple could do something to help us, but until now, I didn't see any sort of that.

About the gfxcardstatus, it really worked for me, but, you have to download an old version, because the new one doesn't work well for our purposes. The new version doesn't stay all the time in the integrated video mode, check their explanation:

"gfxCardStatus v2.3 and above actively prevents you from switching to Integrated Only mode when any apps are in the Dependencies list (or if you have an external display plugged in). This is because if you were to do this, your discrete GPU would actually stay powered on, even though you've switched to the integrated GPU."

http://gfx.io/switching.html#power-source-based-switching

So, after reading that, I managed to download an old version (I'm not with my mac here, but I can tell you later whtat version is), and now I have been able to work with my macbook pro for almost three months without kernel panics. The biggest problem is that using integrate only, you won't be able to plug an external monitor.

Hope it can help you.

This is the explanation why the new ones versions of gfxCardStatus doesn't solve the problem.

Apr 30, 2014 10:56 AM in response to Oberdan

Oberdan, Thank you sir. I read that information this morning and understand what they are saying. I've downloaded 2.1, and found a copy of 1.8.1 online and downloaded it to try later if I have issues.

I'll try this for a while. I don't use an external monitor, so thats not a problem for me. I had a Kernal Panic this morning, but have been busy on my Mac on and off all day with no problem.

That's really the frustrating thing... I've been a tech all my life and there isn't a pattern or one thing to go after. I'm positive it's the graphics card. I can have an affect on it, but can't prove it. Grrrrr.

Does anyone know what the latest version of OS X is that will work without crashing?

If it really is the newer versions of OS X that are causing thse crashes, perhapse we could just stick with an older version for now.

If there's a developer who could write a patch to make this model stable with Mavericks I'd be happy to pay money for that. Heck if all of us chipped in, it'd be far cheaper than logic board replacements.

May 6, 2014 3:08 AM in response to ogg_uk

It appears to be hardware related. Even if the hardware doesn't fail completely, it doesn't work correctly with the newer versions of OSX. I believe (and I'm not a developer) the best they could do is a workaround / patch. Apple isn't going to step backwards for older machines, of course they want us to but new ones.

To the best of my knowledge, the best OS FOR 2010 Macs is Lion. My machine came with Snow Leopard and was fine, I upgraded to Lion and was still fine. I began having problems with ML loaded that only got worse with Mavericks.

Agreed, I'm not going to hope for a fix from Apple. But if a reputable indeopendent developer could make one, I'd happily pay for it.

Thanks. I have looked into the Sale of Goods Act and that looks like a promising route. There is a good summary of the law here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/consumer-rights-refunds-exchange

Regarding repairs - is it actually possible for Apple to repair this? From what I've read so far, it sounds like all of these machines have this fault built in, that it's an irreplaceable part of the hardware. Is that correct?

If so, I wonder if I should look into getting a different laptop to replace it instead of a repair.

May 7, 2014 4:00 PM in response to ogg_uk

>>is it actually possible for Apple to repair this?

They normally replace the logicboard, it's not unknown for the new one to develop similar problems.

There's a (very) long thread here about the 2011 model, where someone in England got free repairs for a computer that didn't ever have a repair program (page 279 of 329, April 7). You might find it a useful read, and feel that your case is stronger due to the TS4088; albeit longer since purchase.

May 20, 2014 6:34 PM in response to cfbbaer

You just described my MacBook perfectly. Same year and model. Same symptons. I will try the Genius Bar at the Apple store to see if I can get this covered under warranty since it's obviously a manufacting defect from all I have read. Not sure I would fork over any $$$ though since it obviously Apple's problem and they should have the decency to fix it. I'll let ya know how it goes. It's sad because I was an original Mac addict (1st Mac was a Mac 128) and finally after years of Windows decided to come back. Well here I am back and not overly thrilled.
