GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

Apple Repair Depot $310 for a new motherboard. The Genius at Apple confifirmed using VST that this is one of the effected MacBooks. I still think Apple should be paying for this since it is a manufacturing defect and Apple manufacturered a broke MacBook. Unfortunately I need my computer back for now and don't have the time to argue. BWT - I am typing this from a Windows 7 PC. ARGH!!

I was having the same problems, too, same 6,2 model, i5, 8GB ram, 256 GB SSD. Apple genius did the test, machine passed it and did not fall under warranty in february.

they still kept it there for a deeper examination and suggested I should swap the logicboard PLUS all the ram, as the new logicboard would not work with the ram installed (8GB from purchase on).

I declined, took it back, took out a 4GB ram chip (the upper one). no kernel panics in this configuration. this is reproducible for 10.9.2 and 10.9.3.

I do have some graphic artifacts though (only by using the integrated card, and having been much worse in 10.9.2 than in 10.9.3).

I did not check if the kernel panics could be related to the ram module I pulled out or to the upper ram slot. So far I just use the machine, the ram difference is not that noticable. I need the external monitor for keynote slide shows.

might test some new ram chips (and go up to 16 gig ;-)

pauljfromaugusta, PDCarter, are you doing fine with your configuration right now?

Note: i assume this fix only works for GPU panics caused by read access failure (see what your panic dump says).

Thanks, it works for me. At least until now 🙂

** RESOLVED ** I took my MacBook to the Apple store and had them run the VST "Video Switching Test" which came back with the expected FAILED message which is indicitive of the defect in some MacBook Mid-2010. I ended up having them send it to the repair depot and for a flat fee they replaced my logic board and display. I am happy to report that now after 3 days I have had ZERO problems.

Just an FYI that while Apple's VST is not generally available I found that I could use the free Cinebench app to test by running the OpenGL test. My Mac would restart everytime using Cinebench's OpenGL test which may be a good way for other's to test if a repair depot visit could resolve their issue.

Good luck! I am happy again and liking Apple again. I still think Apple should have covered the repair but Oh Well!

🙂

Hi, I have the same problem. VERY nasty!

With this nice program gfxCardStatus I am abel to prevent NVidia grafic card to start. Which solves this problem The effect is No external monitor, no iphoto.

I went to mac-store - they were running some tests - according to them the Video Switching Test was included. But they could not find something - their advise - set up the whole mac again!

I have the same issue with my laptop, I went to apple store to figure out what is the options, they said, that repair cost is $524 plus tax.

I asked the genius bar tech. to speak to the store manager. went through a long argument about the video card issue and its not my fault as its apple's.

He said there was a time frame to change the video card for free but the time frame is ended. that didn't make sense to me as if he as a manager confirmed that there was a recall on that video card shouldn't be a time frame for it. didn't get no luck with the manager but he gave me an advice to contact apple care and see they can do. I took his advice and from the first 2 min. talking to the representative he was able to give the order to the store manager to fix my laptop with no charge. try to contact apple care and they will fix it. they care about customer satisfaction and we all understand its not apple fault its nvidia.

Hello,

got the same problem here, was living with it for a long time but then it started to get more frequent for whatever reason, so i found this thread, tried both solutions, the gfxCardStatus and the Config.plist thing...

That fix made the problem go away for a few days completely, but then it came back and now happens almost at the normal rate again, very annoying... I know I have the other soluiton available, but I always use dual screen so I really dont want to... Feels really **** to basically be forced to buy a brand new computer now because of the high repair price... Will try to live with this for now...

Hi Everyone!

I had the same issue everyone had here when I upgraded to ML but fortunately Apple agreed to replace my logic board for free last June. That happened after so many calls and explanations because the 3 year period was already gone. Everything's been working perfectly ever since the logic board was replaced. However, I have never upgraded to Mavericks. I am still now with ML with the new logic board and it works great. My question is, now that I have got a new logic board, could I install Mavericks without problems?? Would like to know if anybody that got their logic board replaced and where previously in ML, have upgraded now to Mavericks without reported issues? I believe if the logic board works perfectly now, well it should work perfectly with Mavericks as well, but since we all know that any OSX upgrade could develop issues to any computer, then I am worried on taking that step forward.

I would like to thanks everyone in advanced for your time.

so I read about the problem the past weeks.

Took my mbp to the service, because of several kernel panics the last weeks.

The service told me the logic board needed to be changed (600€ ⚠ in Germany). Talked to apple, but there is no way I'm going to get any help, because it is not enough that you pay quite a lot of money for such a computer, you also need to buy apple care.

I bought apple because of the "it just works" think. Now I'm angry.

btw. There are repair-offers at ebay with 1 year warranty that replace ONLY the Graphics chip, what will cost you about 130€.

Anyone tried? I guess even if it would work, it'll last half a year and something else will break..

I thought I should post about my case with this exact model (MBP mid 2010, 6.2) and this same issue.

My MBP was affected by this bad GPU issue (let's call it TS4088). I had bought the computer in 2010 (Snow Leopard) and started having way too many Kernel Panics after Lion came out. It was a bad time as this was when the issue was not very known and everyone was trying to figure out what was going on. Multiple trips to Genius Bar, lots of research (one of the original post in these forums about the issue when first reported had over 3,000 replies back in 2011).

In one of my visits to the Genius Bar, they finally ran the VST test, turned out it my unit was affected and they sent it for logic board replacement for free (as part as their recall campaign). I got my computer back and it worked perfectly through Lion, then Mountain Lion and Mavericks... until now.

I upgraded to Yosemite a week ago and it's been kernel panics galore since then. I decided to format my computer and reverted back to Mavericks from a clean install... but guess what: IT KEEPS HAPPENING ALL THE TIME... which is shocking because I had used Mavericks since it came out and had zero problems. I'm downgrading to Lion as we speak, but my hopes are not very high.

Is anyone able to explain how could this happen? If it's a hardware issue and I was able to use Mavericks for months without any panics, how is it possible that just upgrading to Yosemite has awaken the beast inside this ****** logic board/GPU? Is it just an issue that is just bound to happen over the time with this specific model?

I do have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow, which is going to be fun. They did replace the logic board for free back in fall 2011, so I'm not sure if they are going to help me at all now... I'll try to tell them that even though I bought the computer in 2010, it's barely 3 years since they did the replacement and that they should count from the date they gave me a new logic board rather than the purchase date.

I'll report with the results of my visit to the Genius... in the meantime, could anyone try to explain how this could be happening again? I understand that it may happen with a new system and I'm OK with downgrading, but how is it possible that even downgrading to a OSx version that worked perfectly 2 weeks ago now is totally unusable? How is this latent issue somehow triggered by a system update and now it happens when reverting to older versions?

Hi. I've got a macbook pro mid 2010, affected by this issue. After a long search, i thin i found a workaround to avoid pay a lot of money for an old laptop repair (no warranty).

This issue is avoid the mac to use the nvidia chip, yes i know, you lost this funcionallity, but u get one stable equipment.

As super user (sudo su -) go to /System/Library/Extensions

Move the files/directories named NV*.kext and GeForce*.kext to a new backup directory.

Reboot the system.

in my case me laptop doesn't reboot or GPU panic for 5 days.

I hope this help others.

Good luck frm Spain.
