My iPhone 5c keeps changing time! Sick of this!!!

I've had the most worthless run around between my carrier & apple. I know lots of folks have reported the same problem. Where's the solution?!? It's not a matter of settings!!

I had the issue of iPhone 5c clock losing time whenever the phone went to sleep.

It would wake up behind by 4 mins, 30mins, 2 hrs.

Turning the phone off and back on would sync the time, but would start losing minutes as soon as it went to sleep or was closed.

Many fixes were tried by Apple and the Phone Carrier techs, which were unsuccessful:

  • Toggling Settings/General/Date&Time/SetAutomatically On->Off
  • Restore to factory settings, restore from backup
  • Settings/General/Date&Time/SetAutomatically->OFF, then Disable WiFi, then Settings/General/Date&Time/SetAutomatically->ON

After much troubleshooting and 5 support sessions, got to Apple Engineer, which corrected the issue with the following steps:

  • Settings/General/Date&Time/SetAutomatically->OFF
  • Plug to computer running iTunes
  • Sync
  • Eject phone and unplug
  • Settings/General/Date&Time/SetAutomatically->ON

His explanation of why this worked where other methods failed: disabling automatic cell carrier sync allows the phone/OS to sync its clock with an alternative time reference, in this case the PC. Syncing with iTunes set a new time sync source (the PC system time). Toggling SetAutomatically back to ON replaced sync source back to the cell carrier network. This time, the OS is forced to re-create the definition settings for time sync'ing, instead of leveraging prior (possibly corrupted) settings.

Sorry to say the fix I described above worked for about 20 hours, then same behavior restarted.

I got an appointment at Genius bar.

They tried a few more setting tweaks, but no luck. The clock in my 5C kept falling behind by a few minutes even when it spent as little as 5 mins in sleep mode.

The issue was attributed to failure of the timing hardware. Both Verizon and Apple mentioned many other 5C's are having issues with time, although it's more related to time-zone random changes or sync issues with cell tower. They hadn't seen this issue where phone stays at the time of day of last going to sleep.

I got a replacement phone, as it was still in warranty.

I chatted with apple support online they escalated my issue to a senior adviser who called me and said that my device was out of warranty and typically the don't do anything to help. Then he said they will make one exception and set me up with an apt at the genius bar stating that if they cannot fix it there they will replace it. I'm pretty happy about that because I bought the phone used online.

Sounds like a win-win situation...you walk away happy with a replacement phone, Apple has one less potential customer griping about how a $500 handheld computer can't keep time.

This particular type of failure is quite sensitive, especially since a growing number of smartphone users no longer wear a watch or even own an alarm clock. The last thing you'd want is rumors about unreliability of timekeeping, of big executives missing meetings, especially a few weeks before the (gasp!) Apple Watch release.

Apple has top support, no complaints there.

I am having this issue also. I've just installed the latest update (8.3) but that has not helped. I have tried all of the suggestions above, apart from going instore to see if they can sort it.

My phone seems to keep the time when it is charging but is slow/ screws up once I unplug it. I charged it overnight last night and the time was fine when I woke this morning (my alarm went off as normal) but by the time I got to work this morning (at 9:30am) it said it was 6am yesterday - ***?

Anyone with any more ideas before I try going into Apple?

Same problem tried all above, does not work.

I noticed when it is connected with the computer or a power supply the time runs ok.

As soon you disconnect and go to standby you loose your time and it is back to the time you started with the computer or when you plugged in the power.

I have 6 collegues with an iPhone 5c with IOS 8.3 and they have no problems?

So I think it is a hardware problem and then it is the usual with Apple deny and no warrenty.

My iPhone has this problem for over a year and the answer is always wait for the update and now is the warrenty over.

So please Apple be honoust and give warrenty for this problem.

Did Apple ever replace or repair your 5c for you? All of a sudden I too have this exact same issue, have wiped the phone with iTunes to factory and the problem remains. Called Apple on this yesterday and they certainly did not offer up any solution for me other than give them $350.00 and they'll replace it.

Very frustrating!
