I’m stumped. I Now Have 2 Networks

I’m stumped. For added security, I renamed my WiFi Airport Express network. The old network still shows up in the Network system preferences and appears to be still broadcasting. I even clicked the advanced button and deleted it from the preferred networks. I want to remove the old network entirely from showing up. What do I do?

The WiFi works on the new network but has slowed the WiFi down. I want to get back to only one Network.

Any suggestions are really appreciated.

thanks,

greg

Hi John,

I have spent almost 4 hours on the phone with Apple Care techs. One call 4 days ago and I just got off the phone tonight with the second tech.

In both cases, the end result was I still have the 2 wifi networks. Both are online and live. I can connect to either network. One is much slower than the other.

My iPad shows both networks in Air Play, however only one network will do mirroring via Reflector.

I am running ethernet directly from the modem to the Airport Express and Apple TV is unplugged. My iMac is connected to WiFi as is my iPad.

Here are the two networks, both refer to Captain Kirk and are mine:

Tomorrow I will call Apple Care for the third time to see if there is any way of getting rid of the extra network which BTW was set up in error on the first call to Apple Care and we didn't catch it. I saw it today.

Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks for jumping to help.

John I ended up with a "AppleCare Senior Advisor" who went through more tests with me and my iMac and Airport Express. What he found was my Airport Utility on my iMac 2011 was not compatible with my 2008 Airport Express. I could go to the iOS App store and get an older version of Airport Utility and try to set the Airport Express up with my iPad, he said, or I could get a new Airport router.

I don't know if that is really the problem, however I got sick of nearly 6 hours of phone calls to Apple that I decided to bite the bullet and buy an Airport Extreme, which BTW is not really compatible with my iMac. The new router supports AC technology instead of wireless N. Meaning the iMac would only connect to a 2.4 network and not the 5 as my 2011 iMac does not support AC wireless technology.

This may be a case of planned obsolesence in order to reap more profit from the consumer, but at least I now can stream video from my iMac to the Apple TV etc.

The next real battle is going to be the loss of Net Neutrality.

Thanks for your looking into this John, it is appreciated.

Oh ya, one more thing...I still have that exta network "out there" and nobody can figure out how to shut it down. So I have the new network and an old one that we could not get rid of with either router.

The new 802.11ac AirPort Extreme is fully compliant with 5 GHz 802.11n and so is your iMac. Configure it to create a separately named 5 GHz network using AirPort Utility as in the above screenshot, and connect to it. Since it's new you can avail yourself of AppleCare's free telephone support if you need help configuring it.

The iMac will connect to either the 2.4 or 5 GHz network created by the new Extreme, but giving the 5 GHz network a separate name will make the one it's using obvious. Otherwise, option-click the iMac's Wi-Fi menu to find out.

The original 802.11b/g - only Express cannot be configured with Mavericks. They bear model numbers A1084 and A1088. The model number is in the red box shown below:

Those models were discontinued in March, 2008, so if yours is one of them that would explain its absence from AirPort Utility.

John Galt,

I know it is improper to hijack a thread but I didn't know how else to contact you and it appears you are an expert in connecting a MacBook Pro to a projector. Could you look at and possibly answer the following post?

It appears from your other solutions, buying the adapter from your recommended source would be best as its price is much more reasonable than most other stores.

One additional question:

Since our mini-display port is also a Thunderbolt port, does it mean the audio will play through the HDMI connector as long as it is selected in preferences?
