Help! For only the past few months, my iPhoto has slowed my MacBook to a halt every time I open it. I do have 26,000 photos in it, but my hard drive has heaps of space left. I am now loathe to even open iPhoto because of what it does to every other open app. It runs very very very slowly and takes forever to complete any request.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - repair permissions and then repeate rebuild your iPhoto library database

New library works fine and very fast.
PS I also have an upgrade to 8GB of RAM headed on its way to me from the US.
And just to verify - you repaired permissions on the "slow" library and rebuilt it too"
Note to switch back to the original library use the iPhoto file menu ==> switch library

Correct, that's right. I used the slow library to verify permissions and I also rebuilt it. LarryHN, I am so grateful thus far for your help, by the way.
DOwnload iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and use its rebuild command to create a totally new library leaving your existing one unchanged - this will only include sharable items so will not transfer projects and keepsakes - but the original will still have everything - hopefully this will give you a library that works correctly

Ta Larry, you're a legend and I'm doing that right now. Looks like it is workign well. For future reference, for future photo imports, should I put them into the new library only [the rebuilt one]? Will I get a chance to choose which library in the future? How do I ensure there's consistency between the two libraries? Thanks.
No need to keep the old library once yo are sure things work - unless you have projects in it - If you do have projects you want to keep I would just archive the old library and not use it except for those projects and use the new library

In the middle of the rebuild my iPhoto crashed and I had to force quit it. Now the Iphoto library manager seems to be hanging and not making any progress at all. Should I hit cancel and start again, and delete the iPhoto Libary [rebuilt]? Thanks!

i used the iPhoto Library Manager software and rebuilt a new library. Except now my iPhoto does not recognise the new library built. The new library is called iPhoto Library (rebuilt).photolibrary. When I go to open iPhoto it does not give me that as a choice of libraries I can open - just the old one. When I manually select the new library on my computer, iPhoto will still not open it - it will not let me click on OPEN when I select it. Thank you for any help at all.
need to know how you are doing things to tell what you are doing wrong or what iPhoto is as the case may be
If you depress and hold the option key and launch iPhoto you will get a lect library window showing all valid iPhoto libraries - does that get what you want?

no - when i do that I only get the old library, not the rebuilt one.
Then when I choose OTHER LIBRARY and navigate to the Photo Library (rebuilt).photolibrary it will not let me choose that. Is the extension the problem - that it's .photolibrary?
Time to try again - trash teh library you can not open and have IPLM rebuild your orignal library again - it should open automatically when complete
