Apple lightning to 30-pin adapter not working after 5s iOS 7.0.4

Is anyone else having problems using the Apple-made lighting to 30-pin adapter cable (not the one-piece adapter plug) with their iPhone 5S on 7.0.4? Specifically, I am seeing that the adapter is no longer recognized by the iPhone. My adapter was working fine for 3 months until suddenly last week after a 7.0.4 upgrade it stopped charging the iPhone but still allowed audio out through the adapter. I made sure my iPhone jack wasn't the problem by ensuring the USB-to-lightning cable charged normally which it did. I took the adapter to the Apple store yesterday and they replaced it under warranty no questions asked. The new one, however, shows the "accessory not recognized" message on my iPhone 5S. I took this new one to the Apple Store today and the same thing happened with a brand-new one off the shelf. Their store "tech guy" was actually able to replicate the same problem on their own iPhone 5S in the back with the brand-new adapter off the shelf. They were at a loss and suggested I wait to see if Apple has a fix. Anyone else having this problem or know if this is a known issue? Until it gets fixed, I can't use the adapter.

Yes! I am having the same problem but in my case its charging and syncing works but audio output does not work.

If you have a genuine Apple Adapter.....

Restore iPhone as new and start again

Update may have corrupted the iOS installation

If not genuine that is the problem especially as you have no audio

Yes, take it back as I did. The Apple Store gave me my money back in full because even the new adapters off the shelf were not working correctly with my 5S on 7.0.4. They suspect it is an issue with iOS 7.0.4 since it started after the update. I am still waiting to here if Apple has recognized this as official problem or not.

I just bought a brand new 5S from the Apple Store in Bath (UK) and also the Lightning to 30 Pin Adapter (the one with the short cable) as soon as I plug it into the 5S I also get the message "This accessory is not supported by this device" and that's without anything plugged into the 30 pin socket. I tried connecting it using the adapter to each of my cars and although power is getting through the 5S does not show up as a device in either of my car's audio systems. Also tried connecting it using the adapter to my imac and again it does not show up.

I have another car with a USB socket and that works fine with the 5S and it's Lightning to USB lead as does the connection to the iMac using that lead which is how I set it up on iTunes.

My iPhone is on iOS 7.1 so it looks like whatever caused the issue in 7.0.4 has not been rectified with 7.1.

Well I was wrong it's got nothing to do with software or a problem with the iPhone 5S, it's the adapter hardware.

I went to the Cribbs Causeway store and was able to replicate the error message on the demo iPhones plugging in the adapter i purchased. So I was given a replacement, tried that with same result on my 5s and the demo phones. Then tried another taken off the shelf just like the previous one and voila it worked. It turns out based on the comments of the guy who served me, that they had seen a few instances of this issue.

I had already logged a case with Apple and they are sending me another cable FOC they are going to try to establish the batches of these adapters that have this problem as they suspect a manufacturing problem

SO, if you have this issue with a recently purchased adapater just take it back to the Apple Store and ask for a replacement.

I think you misunderstood/misread the message I just posted. I did return the adapter and the second faulty adapter was tried out in the store. The third one works fine so I have kept that. Apple are looking into this as I implied it looks like there may be a number of faulty adapters in the various stores. This is beyond the local stores Genius bars capabilities to resolve.

Actually when I replied I did so to your post refering to Bath

There is a delay in posts appearing at times and this is obviuosly one of them

Your post referring to Cribbs is now showing ,wasn't at point of my posting

we have been recommending returning any lightning cable devices to Apple for some time where there is an issue, there is logic in the small plug

Thanks for the good info, Big Apple cat. I had purchased and returned the adapter twice including having the Genius take one out of the box at the store. All three didn't work. If you get a response from Apple indicating which batches work vs. don't work, please let us know. I don't want to repeat buying and returning a fourth time if I don't have to. Perhaps I should go to the store and have them keep opening new adapters until one works! 😉

I use my lightning to 30-pin adapter in the car to play music.

The plug in my car is 30-pin and won’t plug directly into my iphone 5. The adapter has worked fine up until

recently. I update my phone OTA so I can’t say exactly when, but I’m guessing it started getting buggy after 7.0. After the 7.1 update, it won’t work at all anymore. Basically instead of playing music through my car speakers when plugged in, the music will come directly out of the phone’s speakers. I tested to make sure it wasn’t my car accessory by plugging in an older 30-pin ipod and it worked just fine. I really hope Apple resolves this soon.

I am having the exact same issue. I have a 7th Gen iPod Nano. I have portable speakers that use the old style plug and I needed an adapter. I have two pin adapters and a dock extension. ALL stopped working suddenly. They will charge my device, but they no longer have audio. One device failing is upsetting but understandable. Three failing at the same time could not be a coincidence. Apple did something with their update that messed up the adapters. Are they going to fix this? I shouldn't have to go through the inconvenience of traveling to an Apple store to have them replace my items.

Same here. IPhone 5s. Adapter worked fine in car until recently. Loss of audio output from car speakers. Sound only from phone speaker. when an older phone is plugged in to 30-pin cord, audio plays fine through car speakers.

I'm confused - will the Apple store where I purchased the 30-pin adapter replace it with a new adapter?

Will that fix the problem?

Why is there no response from Apple regarding this problem?

Thank you.

Aug 11, 2014 10:22 AM in response to Joe_W

Joe_W, yes, the Apple Store will replace it with a new adapter, however, as of earlier this year there was no guarantee that a replacement would work any better. After a few free-of-charge replacements by the Apple Store that still didn't work with my 5s on latest iOS, I eventually just returned it for my money back. I am hoping someone knows which, if any, iOS version or adapter hardware versions work properly and replies to this thread.

Spiral04, you need to escalate this to Apple via the store or if you have an Apple Care Agreement just set up a support call.

There is a manufacturing fault with a batch of these adapters, as Peter Gillespie has said it's not just a simple cable there are electronic components inside. Apple sent me a new one to test and it too was also faulty so in the end it was a case of getting another and another from the store until I got one that worked. Apple's difficultly is finding out what caused the problem and to identify the manufacturing batch.

I've been using my replacement cable for some time now with no further problems.
