How do I set up FaceTime over cellular data (AT&T Unlimited data plan iPhone 5 iOS7)

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me as I called both Apple and AT&T about this issue and they sent me back and fourth to one another endlessly.

I have an iPhone 5 from AT&T with an unlimited data plan. I can only make facetime calls over wifi, but would like to make them over cellular data so that I don't need to be in a wifi area to facetime. On my iphone, in settings>cellular there's a button that says set up facetime over cellular. Upon selecting this, a prompt stating Facetime requires an active wifi connection or an eligible cellular data plan. To enable... contact ATT at 611 or visit www.att.com/mywireless. There's no place on this website to set up facetime eligibility over cellular. Speaking with the ATT reps, they say that I should be able to use facetime over celluar with my plan, and we reset my settings, network settings, restarted the phone, checked that restrictions were not preventing me from using factime, etc.. This did not do the trick, and they transfered me to Apple, which had me do the same things and also did not solve the problem. Apple said that it's a data problem and so it's ATT's business, ATT says it's a Facetime problem so it's Apple's business. The buck is continually passed.

Does anyone know how to resolve this situation?

I am considering either visiting ATT

All I can think of is I that changed between when it used to work and now is that: 1. I upgraded to the latest iOS 2. It reads LTE now. Before it read 4G.

Yes I have tried all those troubleshooting steps : Power On/Off, Rest, Restore - it does not work. This issue occurs on both the phones in my family plan and I know for a fact that both phones had facetime working over cellular atleast until 2 months back.

SOLUTION:

Call ATT at 611 from a different phone and have them check :

1. What does their system indicate in terms of the device you own? I had a 5S but their system said iphone4 (the root cause of the mess)

2. What does their system indicate about the plan you own? I had unlimited grandfathered in for years but their system indicated newer unlimited.

3. Provide them your device's IMEI : Settings>General>About.

They will ask you to turn the device off

apply the change

Turn the device on

Turn off and wifi and test facetime. it should work.

vython is correct.

This advice worked perfectly. My husband switched from a Galaxy to an iPhone 6+, unlocked. When we activated it at ATT, they didn't enter the IMEI correctly. Thank you.

I was trying to give the person who supplied the right answer credit and give them a thank you because there were a lot of really WRONG answers in the thread. Thank you for pointing out the error of my ways. Next time I'll be more clear so you can understand what I'm doing in a simple thank you post that wasn't written to you - I forgot to CLEARLY indicate that I was quoting someone. You misunderstand to think that I'm trying to get credit for a right answer - I'm appreciative that I could solve my FaceTime problem. If by any strange happening I should receive points for the post, I'll not only have them removed, but I'll keep you updated. Your mistaken, quick and tart reply is the exact reason that so many novices find these threads intimidating when instead they should be utilizing these resources to enjoy their Apple products. Rather than earning points, helping to solve a problem is the real goal of these forums. Even you have probably supplied correct answers that helped people, given your point status. So, I guess there's a thank you out there for you too. Now that I have two seconds to see how the editor works, I see there is a button for quoting. If I could change my SIMPLE thank you post, I would. Perhaps I'll spend the next few minutes fishing about and see if I can edit it. Thank you for making me more diligent.

The best thing to do is click on "This helped me" to give credit for a correct response. Only the original poster can select the option that the issue was resolved as other people may have different experiences with the posted solution or their experience may be different.

As a general rule, you don't want to resurrect posts that haven't been updated for quite some time. If you have a question to ask the community then feel free to make a new post and use "This helped me" if you want to give credit to someone else. None of us are trying to be rude but there are a lot of people that dedicate a lot of time browsing through posts and making suggestions or offering solutions and so quick replies are usually what allows us to get to as many posts as possible. Please don't be offended as none was intended. The more people involved in the forums ultimately make a better "community" to help others out.
