When trying to setup my Airport Express, my Airport Utility recognizes it; however when I go to set it up it gives me an "Unexpected Error, Try Again" response. I have on numerous occasions reset it to factory default settings by holding down the reset pin and plugging it into power. Any ideas how to get around the error message?

Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express for the setup.
This assumes that you are trying to configure the Express to wirelessly join or extend an existing network. Things are different if you are connecting the Express to an modem.
Post back to tell us what model of Express you have in that case, and what operating system you are using. It sounds like you are no longer using OS X (10.6.x) as you indicate in your profile.
Once you have the Express configured and the settings have been updated, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.
I had this problem - I am running OSX El Capitan 10.11.1 and use a Time Capsule as my WiFi router. Tried all the suggested solutions - hard reset Airport Express etc but none of them worked. I turned off my modem and Time Capsule and then turned them both back on again. Tried to add Airport Express again and it worked having prompted me for my Time Machine password.

I was having the same "An unexpected error occurred. Please try again" problem, over and over again. Using my iPhone to set up the Airport Express instead of the Mac worked for me first time. Thank you!
The only way it would work for me is: using my iPhone i went to SETTINGS, then WI-FI, underneath "Choose a network", i saw the device i was trying to add, (airport extreme). Clicked on that, and went through the wizard like a breeze and connected on the first try.

Yeah, I followed all the other solutions but when I saw yours about having some "ethernet cables" as part of your problem, I realized that could be my issue as well. When I unplugged my ethernet, it had no errors and got set up right away! Maybe my mac was confused about which network interface to use (Wi-Fi vs. USB Ethernet (etc)).
