Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How can I speed up my MBP?

Like many others, my MBP has slowed considerably since installing Mavericks. Before the install, it was a screaming machine, meaning, it was fast. I run Clean My Mac and MacKeeper regularly, but nothing is helping. I've emptied my cache in Chrome (the only browswer I use). Still nothing. I found a post here about running a program called EtreCheck, which I've done. Below are the results. Can anyone tell me if there are things listed that need to be fixed/deleted/updated/etc.? I would so appreciate it.

I'm guessing you have an issue with EtreCheck. Do you think I shouldn't have used it?

I haven't tested "etrecheck," so I don't know what it does and I don't comment on its output. It's an attempt to imitate me, as its developer graciously admits. I don't need to imitate myself.

I also don't accept the security model. You go to a public message board looking for help, and within minutes an anonymous stranger responds. He's happy to oblige, but only on the condition that you run a black-box application downloaded from some other website that he directs you to. It's all OK, the stranger says, because he says so. If you demur, he insists, and then he insists some more. Why is he so eager for you to run this unknown application, whatever it is?

I have no reason to suspect that "etrecheck" itself is harmful. What is harmful is promoting the belief that such a practice is safe. It isn't and it never will be.

Jan 23, 2014 6:12 PM in response to psmadden

Well,

I, for one, am sorry that you felt we coudn't help you here. Other than the debate about whether or not suggesting to users, with Mac issues, to run an application, developed by another regular, contributing user, to help with diagnosing user Mac problems is a good idea or not, everyone here who contributed solid advice were putting you on the right track to get your Mac running better. I didn' see anything else from anyone here that gave you conflicting advice. All of the issues in your system are things that needed to be dealt with and everyone here tried to help you toward that goal.

I am sorry that you felt you were getting confused and feeling like you being. given conflicting information.

Good Luck to you.

Jan 23, 2014 6:38 PM in response to MichelPM

Michel, I very much appreciated your trying to help. While this thread may lead some people to think otherwise, I'm pretty good at troubleshooting. I'm "that person" my friends call when they have computer user issues. This is the first time I haven't been able to solve my own problem.

The debate I was referring to was, for example, "Your RAM is maxed out./What makes you think that?" and arguing over EtraTech. It's good; No, it's irresponsible to use it. After following Linc's instructions to run his favorite diagnostic and posting the result, only to get no response except for another lecture on EtraTech, I threw in the towel. I usually stick with troubleshooting until I figure out the problem. Today, I just ran out of patience. This one is over my head and I have no problem admitting that.

Note: When I first skimmed Linc's instruction for diagnosis, there was so much info, it initially looked like it was complicated. When I actually read it, I saw how easy it was, and I did it. It would be more helpful - and way less intimidating - to just simply list the instructions and delete everything else. It doesn't take a whole page to explain something so simple. Just my opinion.

As I already said, I appreciate everyone's help

Jan 23, 2014 6:55 PM in response to psmadden

At the end of the day, if you have a hardware fault, you must go to Apple anyway. Its just not clear to me how anyone arrived at this conclusion.

As to conflicting opinion, Linc was being epdantic, but correct. trust, but verify.

In any event, You have to seperate wheat from chaff. re: RAM - do you know how MAvericks manages memory? Its very different from any previous OS of any type, and most opinions are just wrong.

I haev posted dozens of times, but here it is yet again:

About memory management in OSX 10.9 Mavericks

Memory is managed differently, and more efficiently in 10.9. It is (mostly) unique in the industry, but may become trend.

Let’s start with the basics. Mechanical disk drives are very slow, with access speeds in the 10s of milliseconds and transfer rates in the 200-400 Mbps range real world. SSDs are much faster, on the order of a couple of ms access and typically 1200-3000 mbps transfer rates. RAM is much faster than either, in the nanosecond access and transfer speeds of ~8 Gbps effective (1 GHz x 8 bits/byte).

These are rough numbers for comparison purposes only.

So the goal is to keep as much in RAM as possible. But if you run out of RAM what do you do?

Traditionally you take the least used RAM and write it to a special part of the disk, in a way that you can access it most efficiently - minimizing the disk delays. This is called a swap file because you swap RAM in and out of it.

10.9 has a new trick: it compresses RAM using the main processors. Rather than swapping stuff to disk (disks are slow), it actually uses the processor to compress memory and make, for example, 1 GB of physical RAM hold as much as 1.5GB. Similar approaches are used to make MP3 files 10x smaller than the real thing - there is redundancy in data and you can take advantage of that. Apple is making the following calculation: the processors can compress way faster than the disk can swap. And its also predicting that the processors are often partly idle - waiting for swap files or disk access. So rather than swap files around, its compresses the files ***in RAM***.

Compression works,. Tests show that on average it is faster, and that 4GB (i have 4 GB RAM) acts like 5 1/2 - 6GB. Wow.

So, 10.9 will load up most of your RAM, knowing that it can compress some when it needs to. So don’t worry too much that it may look like all your RAM is taken - yea, it is, but its OK.

The measures to look at are:

1. amount compressed. Compression means it has run out of RAM and needs more. As long as compression is low this is fine. In fact this is how 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently than 10.6,7 or 8. Contrary to common wisdom, it requires LESS RAM than 10.8. The colored indicator tells you who this is going - green (good), yellow( iffy) and red (bad).

2. amount swapped. Once it cannot compress any further, or can’t do so efficiently, jot begins old-fashioned swapping. This is a major slow-down and means you would benefit from more RAM. Tiny amounts are OK.

here's an article by Apple - but on th pre-10.9 memory management techniques....mostly still true, but read on.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US

Bottom line - compression makes 10.9 use RAM more efficiently than previous OSX versions. It also makes the “ram used” indicator less meaningful, and mans you should monitor “compression” .

That said, RAM has always been one of the most cost effective upgrades possible. People spend too much on new machines and too little on more RAM.

Hope this helps,

I maintain that you begin with measureable things, like CPU usage by process, and work from there.

As i told you several times, in that way you need to trust no one. But you do need to investigate.
