I suspect that the last update of iTunes, versioned 11.1.4, is probably not the faulty one.

THe symptoms are appearing now but the problem is most probably due to a former version of iTunes. My assumption is that a problematic version was installed and operating properly, in the past, ...but had a faulty uninstall procedure (the Apple Device Support service failing to unregister from the event notification to device drivers before being stopped). And one can not be 100% sure if that faulty procedure was faulty at the origin, ....or if it became faulty under changing conditions later on (e.g. antivirus behaviour, microsoft security updates, ...)

But in any case, a proper testing and communication should have detected by Apple and a remedy should have been found as part pf 11.1.4.

Uninstalling:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

And then reinstalling iTunes (without any reboot) from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ should fix the problem.

It did for me.

I was affraid my history etc. would be gone after uninstall, but everything still the way it was before.

Podcasts, music, playlists, apps, everything.

Many users have found that if the ignore the fact that AMDS won't uninstall any carry on to the next step that it all works out in the end.

Otrherwise, try using the slightly more detailed process outlined in HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. It may help to use safe mode if you find yourself unable to remove any of the folders recommended in the instructions.
