Itunes update failed. MSVCR80.dll is missing

I just updated Itunes on my Windows 7 desktop and now it won't open at all. Error message says Program cannot start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Reinstall the program. I don"t want to lose all of my music. What do I do? Will Apple let me know how to fix?? Very frustrating.

I did go to the iTunes website about two hours ago to download the upgrade and that version failed too. That was the download and manual install method that was suggested elsewhere. I think the difference may be in the Windows version being used. Mine that failed is the Windows 7 version sold for home use. I had a system I updated earlier where the iTunes upgrade worked that is Windows 7 Professional. One difference I know about is that some packages install on the Professional version work without privilege issues whereas on my home version I frequently have to use the right-click run-as-administrator option even though the account has administrator rights.

When will software writers be required to produce something that is Fit for Purpose?

Presumably Apple want us to keep buying mp3 downloads?

Thanks to "tt2" for the suggested update. I called Apple Support to ask about this correction and if all Apple apps needed to be de-install. They stated only the items listed below in tt2 note need to be de-installed and in that order. I followed the the described process which took about 35 minutes to de-install and 15 minutes to re-install iTunes. I watched the install process as it re-installed the apps. All seems good now. Great suggestion tt2.

Funny thing when I call Apple Support. Yesterday when I first called, they stated it was a Windows problem with system software and not a Apple. They also stated there was no backoff process available. I submitted complaint nbr on those issues.

Today when I called, Apple Support was well aware of the problem and had documented correction that is same that tt2 stated (tt2, you should ask Apple for a retainer fee.)

Apple Support also mentioned they are probably working on a fix to avoid/recognize this situation. So, does that mean Apple acknowledges , "they have a problem?

Thanks all for the assist

COPY of tt2's note:

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall,

I'm still having problems. I uninstalled all the programs in the correct order, rebooted and installed the latest itunes. However, in the middle of the installation process I receive an error message stating: Apple Mobile Device Support cannot (or failed to start)...then something about administrative access....but I'm logged in as an administrator. My choices are to Abort, Retry or Ignore. I tried Abort and Ignore and get to the iTunes was installed successfully. However, when I try to open iTunes, I get an error stating that iTunes was not installed successfully.

I've done this a couple of times and get the same messages. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
