"Mail cannot connect to the google account "Google"."

Hi, I recently updated my computer to Mavericks 10.9.1 and after doing this the mail application on the dock does not let me connect to my gmail account. The message "Mail can't connect to the google account "Google"." Then it asks me to enter my email password, which I know is correct. after this the window goes away but still won't connect to my email. I have tried deleting and setting back up my account and it still asks the same question. I looked up online for a solution and someone said to turn off the two step verification, but I don't know where to find that and I don't know if that is the actual problem. If anyone knows how to fix this please help me. Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Use Keychain Access to run Keychain First Aid.

To eliminate other issues in your User's folder, testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

Open Mail, add your account.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is with your base files.

If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

Glad I could help. If you need to move over other data....

Transferring files from one account to another on the same Mac

You can use your Shared folder:

  1. Log in to the account you wish to copy files from.
  2. In the Finder, navigate to the Shared folder. It is located in the Users folder.
  3. Copy any files or folders you wish to the Shared folder, such as items on your desktop, in your Documents folder, in your Music folder, and so forth. You may be asked to enter an administrator password when copying certain items. Note: To ensure that you copy items (as opposed to moving items), hold the Option key as you drag files to the Shared folder. Depending on item permissions, some files or folders will copy by default, some may move by default.
  4. Log out of the current account.
  5. Log in to the new account (that you are transferring files to).
  6. In the Finder, navigate to the Shared folder. It is located in the Users folder.
  7. Copy any files or folders you wish from the Shared folder to the desired locations, such as desktop, Documents folder, Music folder, and so forth. You may be asked to enter an administrator password when copying certain items.

If you are low on disc space be careful since this copies data. Move one item at a time then delete the original before starting the next copy.

Oh man. I started experiencing this problem last week! So frustrating, I even backed up to a previous time machine back up and it didn't resolve it. Deleted accounts, etc. Now the only thing that has fixed it has been to create a new user and use that. Is there anyway to fix this without creating a new user? I have so much stuff on this one. Ugh.

[Recommended: Backup your Mail folder by making a duplicate or copying to another location.]

If you have Gmail, be sure you have the All Mail folder selected to sync. Workarounds we previously used no longer work in Mavericks. You might need to go into your Gmail Settings in your browser to make the necessary changes.

Use Gmail with Mavericks Mail

If deleting accounts fails to fix....

Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)

Scroll to Mail folder.

Select the V2 > MailData folder.

Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)

You can test Mail after deleting envelope files. When you open Mail it will re-index your files.

If you still have problems....

Go to Containers in the User's Library folder.

Delete the com.apple.mail folder.

Go to Preferences in the User's Library folder.

If you find any com.apple.mail.plist files, delete these.

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar

Open Mail.

dianeof oregon,

Hi. Just wanted chime in to say thank you. You're process was very helpful. After trying starting a new user and a few other things, I did eventually have to delete my gmail account from internet accounts, and then re-add the account which worked with no problems. Thanks again, cbone

FYI... I also tried changing my password for gmail, but that didn't work for me.

I found the solution to the problem for me. Maybe it'll help some of y'all. I went to Apple Mail > prefrences > Accounts > Account Information > Edit SMTP user list (under the drop down menu by "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):" My username was missing the "@gmail.com". I added that, hit save, and went to the Apple Mail app. It asked me to enter the password one more time and it worked!
