"Mail cannot connect to the google account "Google"."

Hi, I recently updated my computer to Mavericks 10.9.1 and after doing this the mail application on the dock does not let me connect to my gmail account. The message "Mail can't connect to the google account "Google"." Then it asks me to enter my email password, which I know is correct. after this the window goes away but still won't connect to my email. I have tried deleting and setting back up my account and it still asks the same question. I looked up online for a solution and someone said to turn off the two step verification, but I don't know where to find that and I don't know if that is the actual problem. If anyone knows how to fix this please help me. Thanks

Jonathna8, This was so helpful,

I reinstalled my account several times, cleared all the preferences, cleared some of the labels in Gmail,

and tried everything that Diane suggested, but to no avail.

my smtp username was automatically set to <username> rather than <username>@<my-domain.com>

since I am using google apps, the user name alone is just not enough.

Thanks

Danny
