My iphone is not showing up as a device in itunes when it is plugged into my computer, how do I fix this?

I have tried restarting my computer and my iphone but this didn't help. My phone is connecting to the computer and it is showing up in my computer but it will not show up in itunes. I'm not sure what else to do. Please help.

Thanks for this! I had a very similar problem thusly :

Iphone 4S running latest iOS 7 (7.1.2?) and using the latest version of iTunes

Iphone would show up on my computer fine except I kept getting the "trust this computer" message.

Phone showed up under 'mobile devices' only in device manager.

Itunes would allow me to wifi sync with my phone but NOT cable sync, even though it was connected with a certified cable.

This ofcourse locked me out of certain options in itunes such as checking for phone updates and manual restore

I tried a few obvious things to get it to pick up properly to no avail but stumbled upon this response to the issue, swapped the drivers as described and now it's working smoothly once more, Thanks JF Fourie!

If you are having issue; being seen Ur iPhone in my computer but not in iTunes, (iPhone 5s-7.1.2 in windows 8,also can be helpful for other versions of windows and iPhones),:then u try these following steps:

1)go to control panel then uninstall APPLE MOBILE DEVICE SUPPORT

2) then open iTunes and try to plug in Ur iPhone

(during this process, appears a dialog screen stating to install different version of ITUNES like 64 bit or 32 bit)

by this time,u will already configure your issue and know what to do

3) So you uninstall Ur current version of iTunes, restart Ur PC and download a fresh copy of required bit iTunes(not by using APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE)

4)after this u are ready to go,install iTunes, plug in Ur iPhone( don't panic if Ur iPhone is not shown in iTunes), unlock Ur phone and hit the TRUST button

5)enjoying synchronising Ur iPhone iniTunes.

have fun..!

Following instruction of Cerbu and Fourie I selected device manager but I did not see portable device or other device so I cannot continue that instruction to install iphone driver, is any other way to do it.

One thing I want to mention is when I turned on my iphone 4 on window 7 or I did press/hold power and home button it showed the Apple logo and it displayed the cable connection to Itune so I connected usb cable to computer but it do nothing.

Reset your device for a start.

See the steps in the second box of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it. This is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
