Monolingual

Someone suggested that I use a program called Monolingual to remove extra languages from my hard-drive. It gets rid of all those languages that I normally wouldn't use and is said to free up 1GB of space. Should I use it? Is it a reputable program? I would like to have the extra space.

So, I'm still a bit confused. When I clicked Remove to get rid of the languages, that was in the languages tab. But, the PPC architectures were still selected in the Architectures tab, although I did not click Remove while in that tab. So, did I actually get rid of the Architectures? And if I did, from what I understand from Kurt, I shouldn't really have any problems because my processor is Intel? And, by the way, I don't think I have any PPC-only programs on my mac. They're all Intel or Universal because that's all that works on my Intel machine, so I guess I shouldn't worry about architectures?

If all you did was click the Remove button in the language localizations, then that's all that Monolingual removed.

Your computer has loads of files installed that include PPC code such as Rosetta, without which you could not run PPC-only applications. Intel Macs can and do run PPC-only applications, and there are many such applications that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. These include all Adobe applications, Microsoft Office, and others.

Here's a little suggestion: Never remove, rename, or move anything that's part of OS X unless you specifically understand what you are doing the the consequence of doing it.

so, do you reccomend using "trimthefat" to remove unwanted language support? Or do you recommend to do nothing? I don 't want to mess things up. I am fairly new to Mac so I don't want to mess with things that I am not sure of. If languages only take up 1GB, I guess for ease of use, I can live with it, but if there is any easy way to get rid of those things, I would

Thanks

Under Tiger, there is an easy way to get rid of unwanted languages. At least from your applications.

Highlight any app and press Command+I, or choose Get Info from the Apple menu. If the Languages section is closed, click the arrow to expand it. If there are languages other than English (or whatever your preferred language is), highlight any one of them and press Command+A to select all. Then Option+click on the one you want to remain. Press the "Remove..." button. You will get a warning that the application may not work if you remove languages (Adobe Acrobat Pro is the only one I know of that will happen to). Click "Continue" to move the marked languages to the Trash.

Repeat for all applications. It's easy, though a little slow since you have to do them one at a time. Also, English is simply listed as en in some apps. When you've finished clearing all of your applications of unwanted languages, empty the trash.

This method will leave many system and other files with foreign languages still on the drive, but is the safest way to remove at least some of them.

Hello MacBook7,

Here's my take on this. I too was tempted to get rid of the extraneous foreign languages. Monolingual and Tinker Tool System were two I happened to consider after reading Forum reviews and Version Tracker reviews. Personally, I felt I'd stand pat considering there was ONLY about 1 GB of space involved. But then in my case I only use about 14 GB out of two 60 GB internal hard drives, one a backup to the other. My external firewire drives are 20 GB to 60 GB each and also serve as bootable backups and drives for testing upgrades and anything "chancy" in general. Just my two cents worth.

Best,

Yes, Gerald that is good to know. Also, Raymon, I felt the need to get rid of the 1GB. I only have 10GB free (and that's after freeing up 1GB with Monolingual and 2GB by getting rid of printer drivers with Printer Setup Repair). I plan to get rid of more (using an external HD or something) because it's good keep more than that free.

if you do use this program make sure you don't uninstall anything you will need. check marks mean you want to remove it. not keep it. i am a mac noob. and this program owned me cuz i got greedy after it freed up 2.7 gigs of language files. so i tried to uninstall some other stuff using the other tabs. it made it so only a blue screen showed. and i had to call mac to help me.

😟 eventually i had to reformat. so i think only uninstall language files u don need and you'll be fine.
