Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Random hard freezes with 10.9.1

I am experiencing random "Hard" (spinning ball, inability to force quit) freezes with my new 27" iMac. I bought the new machine in December and migrated the hard disk contents from my 3 year old 27" iMac. Over the last month the freeezes have occured at least once every week, but twice yesterday. In one instance the only application in use was Apple Mail. So far today it's been behaving. Both Thunderbolt and USB hard drives were both mounted in every instance.

Any suggestions?

Jack, Techtools only in special cases. Linc Davis is even more adamant about these tools, get rid of....

It may not be the cause of your issues, but that does not matter, your mac should be clean...

What extensions do you have in Safari ?

And did you all as in my first post, this erratic issues are in line with Akamai, Intego, Norton....

You may have to check for the latest version of MS Office; Mail and Safari are updated with Mavericks, which is at 10.9.2.

I post my first answer again:

"

1. starting with the worst: Symantec, uninstall completely, best with the uninstaller. Don't forget the NortonQuickmenu!

2. the next worst: Akamai, same.

3. also uninstall the Seagate tools that came with your hardware, counterproductive.

4. uninstall TechTool, same, don't forget TechToolProtect!

5. uninstall Intego apps, same.

6. Uninstall AdobeResourceSynchronizer, same.

Then restart, and empty the TrashBin.

Edit, maybe time also for a new etrecheck list

OK, you convinced me. I killed everything related to Techtool except for the small eDrive which couldn't possible be involved in this mess. The freezes are completely random in timing and with applications open. I have been unable to see any EXACT duplication of conditions for any two freezes. By the way, I am running the 10.9.2 that came on the iMac. I added my problem to a previous similar one tha had the 10.9.1 title. Today the machine worked beautifully with no freezes. After 5 hours in which I have had open and used ALL of the applications that were running during previous freezes, plus a few more, with no problems. One thing is did not previously report is at times before a freeze some applications, noteably Word and Excel, would slow down considrably.... but today everything has been superfast. I wonder if these problems have anything to do with the fact that my iMac is semi maxxed out with the 3.5 GHz Intel Core 7 processor, 16 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM and a 3TB hard drive? My old one (that I've been using a lot while this new one has been acting up) was just a plain Jane base model. I've run another EtreCheck with the results printed below. After that I've pasted in the last portion of my problem log.. Any insight you may give would be appreciated. I'm beginning to think I have a lemon.

Jack,

the log is not conclusive.

here is an answer while I am reading your post, thus in the same order:

1.

I think eDrive is likely to be one of the causes, why not uninstall it too? It can later be reinstalled when you really believe in it, but in Mavericks it is very likely to be counterproductive.

Then SystemPreferences, Users&Groups, LoginItems: take all entries out, with the minus sign underneath. You can later put back what you really want to have running always; like Dropbox when you cooperate with others on files, that are "communicated with Dropbox.

Now restart and try again.

2.

-- There are Intego leftovers: delete them from Startdisk/Library/LaunchDaemons and Startdisk/Library/LaunchAgents

And delete com.hp.help.tocgenerator.plist from the last one.

3. --Basically you have a lot of software installed that may have been good in old days, but are already in OSX or are counterproductive in Mavericks, uninstall all that were in LoginItems (except Dropbox), even if you have a HP printer (only needs the drivers.

-- I would uninstall Sophos (lately there are reports that is not always running perfectly in Mavericks: if you really want to do a virus scan use ClamXav (Appstore).

Now restart and try again.

I am not ready yet (Seagate software and more), but this should ameliorate the situation considerably.

I just installed Mavericks on my laptop 2.6GHz i7. I encountered the beachball of death on the sign-in and during FCP 7 use. I didn't get much further. I tried a pram reset but it only did one ding then continued to the login page. Sveral retries and a long wait. I ran Disk utility, lots of minor fixes. Ran Onyx for 10.9 and no issues. Still encounterd problem with any actions within FCP. In fact, on the desktop I tried dragging a file to a folder on the desktop and was told it would take several minutes. The file was 27K in size. I launched Activity Monitor and saw nothing that appeared out of the ordinary or taking a lot of cycles.

I looked at my hard drive and saw that I had 67Gig available. I trashed about 110Gig. Funny thing. the

beachball issue cleared up. Even funnier, I didn't have this problem two days ago running under 10.8. So I'm

guessing the algorithm that calculates swap space on the drive is unintentionally grabbing it all minus a very

small percentage. I have 8Gig of ram so that isn't the issue.

Also, when I cleared files the pram reset allowed me to get three chimes. Login was rapid, although I saw the beachball for half a second, and I could rapidly launch FCP v7.

So for everyone who has this problem, try freeing a lot of space on the hard drive and send a note to Apple asking them to look into this issue 'cause it wasn't an issue before.

The iMac continues to randomly freeze after following LexSchelling recommendations but sometimes goes for two days without problems. On April 17th after almost an hour of normal boot uo and operation my screen went completely black while watching a YouTube video. Holding the power button produced the "grey screen of near death". At my wit's end I made an appointment at the Apple store and took it in, explaining the sigtuation. They kept it for two days, could find nothing wrong, and reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system. Brought it home and migrated the disk load from my Carbon Copy Cloner. Same random freezes. Called Apple support and the tech worked me through a new disk wipe, system reinstall, but this time migrated disk load from my Time Machine backup, explaining that during the migration progress some of the bad stuff is left behind. Has been freezing about every other day since. Booted up today at 5:20 AM this morning and everything looked OK. Launched MAIL and started reading message. At 5:20 AM launched Firefox. AT 5:34:38 the computer froze while reading mail. This freeze was a bit different from most in that the clock froze and I could switch among open windows but could not close any or Force quit and applications. Cursor remained a spionning ball. Rebooted at 5:38 and continued reading mail. Launched Safari at 5:51 AM. Ran smoothly until 6:44 AM when Message just quit while adding a contact. Got "Report to Apple" message. Relauched Messages and everything worked fine. Carbon Copy Cloner started and finished its backup at 10:00 AM. It is now 2:12 PM and everything has been going strong for 8 hours. Am thoroughly frustrated with entire situation. Anyone have more suggestions?

Apr 29, 2014 11:45 AM in response to J Evans Jennings

Hi Jack. You still have to clean a bit more.

Assuming you did everything as in my earlier post.

I propose to uninstall the Seagate software: although you have a Seagate disk, Ithink Apple does not install the Seagate software (although I am not 100% certain, maybe somebody else?).

If everything is really gone that I said before and there are no leftovers (see the etrecheck list), and the Seagate software is gone, and when you still have the issues: maybe it is time to contemplate a clean install of OSX and install only applications that you need (after checking that they come from a trusted developer site, after checking that they are really Mavericks compatible, and one at the time). This already I hinted at when you put a first etrecheck list: it was really loaded with sh*t software.

Well, I gave up trying to find out what was causing the problem. The only way I could determine if the random freezing was caused by software or hardware was to completely wipe my hard drive and start (almost) from scratch. After wiping the drive clean and reinstalling the operation system, I copied all of my data over from my CarbonCopyCloner backup after vacation on June 6th and have slowly been reinstalling all of my applications and other "goodies". Almost two weeks have passed an there has been only a partial freeze using Videobox to download some video (11 hours of Drexel University Graduations in one file - Grandson did it Magna *** laude with both Bachelor's and Master's degrees).

Lex, Thanks for trying. Didn't get to see the Pope but after visiting both the Vatican and Istanbul museums have come to the conclusion that when the pope, at the height of the power of Roman Empire....... and the Sultan, at the height of power of the Ottoman Empire... sends a message out to his cardinals (or Governors) the work to "Send me you best stuff"........ They get the best stuff!!! Unbelievable collections. New Acropolis museum in Athens is also good.
