I have 3500 photos on iphoto on my macbook pro.

When i connect my iphone and go to photos sync page in itunes, I can choose wehre to sync from. I then select iphoto (because I dont konw where else my iphotos are) and then i see about 800 photos listed beside the word iphoto folder in itunes.

So why are 2700 photos that are on my mac book not showing in my itunes that is also on my macbook and how do i get them onto my iphone where i want to use iphoto

I have uploaded a version of iPhoto library from a month ago into a new iphoto. And all I see are placeholders in the majority of photos. White dashes round where photos should be. All the text is there and event headings and dates. Very curious.

I thought Time Capsule would have saved the images but it doesnt seem to have. Or I am not understanding some other issue.

I really hope there is some way to get these images back. Both children's childhoods were committed to Time Capsule and Macbook. 😟 And I was just about to make hard copies on DVD next weekend.

Time Machine can only make full backups of your iPhoto library, if iPhoto is not open, while TimeMachine is backing up. See this document:

iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later)

You may need to repair or rebuild the restored library after restoring it, as explained in this paragraph:

Follow the steps below to view and restore from your Time Machine drive.

To restore photos:

  1. Quit iPhoto.
  2. Connect your Time Machine drive.
  3. In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
  4. Enter Time Machine. (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
  5. Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
  6. Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.

iPhoto may prompt you to repair your library if there are some inconsistencies in your files. If so, please allow it to proceed by clicking the Repair button. If you notice blank thumbnails, reopen iPhoto while holding down the Command and Option keys. When the Rebuild iPhoto Library window appears, enable the "Rebuild all of the photos’ thumbnails" checkbox. This may take a long time, depending on the size of the library.

Thank you.

I tried this and have rebuilt thumnnails plus all the other 3 options available and still i have white ticked thumbnails instead of images.

I notice that when I click the red x on the top left of the open window it closes the application, rather than just minimising it the way other apps do. Is there maybe soemthing wrong with my iphoto?

That is how it is supposed to be. iPhoto can only have one iPhto library open at a time and cannot do anything, without the application window open. So closing the application window will just close iPhoto.

All the information about the photos is there, the date, time, location, dimension, photo name and to which album it belongs....but no images

Did restoring from TimeMachine restore the photos in the Masters folder inside the iPhoto library?

Has the size of the iPhoto library increased, after you restored it? Do again a "Show Package Contents", as described by Old Toad:

TGIF.

Thank you for your help during the week.

I tred rebuilding everything and ended up on the phone to Apple in Portugal who in the end suggested i create a new iphoto library from the masters. Many photos and annoyingly the Project book i was working on have vanished. Depsite many back ups to Time Capsule. I can see project files but i cannot make them open in iphoto for some reason.

As soon as I created a new iphoto library from the masters the images all disappeared yet again!

I closed iphoto and reopened it and the images are now there, except for the many ommissions.

I cant understand where my photos are...When i click on picutres all i see is a little icon saying photolibrary (several times over). When I was a windows user i could actulaly see the names of the photos and it was much easier to just select them and deal with them. I cannot fathom Finder or how it is supposed to make life simple.

Anyway, I have decided now to abandon iphoto altogether unless anyone here can give me a reason why this has all happened so that I can ensure it doesnt happen again. If it is just a matter of iphoto being unstable, then I will use Picasa. I do not want to spend days yet again filling in faces and creating projects and albums to then have it all disappear without any trace of a backup.

I opened Picasa last night and have 3000 photos that have not been opened in years. All intact. So that is a positive.

If these are iPhoto Libraries that you can see on the Time Machine hard drive with the Finder they can't be opened by iPhoto. They must be restored from within the Time Machine app as shown in this screenshot:

User uploaded file

Once restored you can try opening and, if necessary, repairing the backup with iPhoto or iPhoto Library Manager.
