iCloud Add-In Crashes Outlook 2010

Problem (Short Description):

iCloud Add-In (from iCloud Control Panel 3.1 for Windows) crashes MS Outlook 2010 at start-up

Problem (Long Description):

  • Fresh installation of MS Outlook 2010
  • Fresh installation of iCloud Control Panel 3.1 for Windows
  • Sync "Contacts, Calendars, and Tasks" on iCloud Control Panel with Outlook
  • Upon opening MS Outlook, MS Outlook crashes
  • Error message indicates iCloud Add-In is to blame - specifically APLZOD32.dll (iCloud Add-In)
  • MS Outlook offers to disable iCloud Add-In; I click YES
  • MS Outlook loads up OK without iCloud Add-In enabled
  • But this means MS Outlook is not synchronising with iCloud

Troubleshooting Attempts

After researching online and trying a few suggested "solutions", none worked for me.

Note: I have also disabled all other MS Outlook Add-Ins when I did my troubleshooting to ensure other add-ins do not play a part with the problem.

Suggested Solution 1: Disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) on MS Outlook

Result: MS Outlook still crashes

(Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5364467 - Jo Ga )

Suggested Solution 2: Remove iCloud Add-In, then Add it back on MS Outlook

Result: MS Outlook still crashes

(Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5364467 - AlexDG83 )

Suggested Solution 3: Un-install and Re-install iCloud Control Panel 3.1 for Windows

Result: MS Outlook still crashes

(Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5362795 - aeblong )

Suggested Solution 4: Untick sync on iCloud Control Panel, Sign Out, Sign In, Sync again, Ensure iCloud Add-In is Enabled

Result: MS Outlook still crashes after iCloud Add-In is enabled

Suggested Solution 5: Remove Outlook Profile

Result: Untested at the moment

(Source: http://outlooktalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1663 - jsoctus )

Suggested Solution 6: Install an earlier version of iCloud Control Panel (e.g. version 2)

Result: Untested at the moment

(Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5362795 - aeblong )

Suggested Work-Arounds

Suggested Work-Around 1: Have iCloud Add-In disabled at MS Outlook start-up; Enable Add-In only after MS Outlook starts normally

Result: MS Outlook crashes after adding the iCloud Add-In back

I am stuck. Does anyone else have a solution or suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

I'm having the same issue. Thank you for documenting your troubleshooting. I hope someone has a solution or there's an update to fix this buggy version soon.

Is it possible to install an earlier version? It used to work great. I'm also having no luck getting my PhotoStream to sync lately. I get shared PhotoStreams, but nothing shows up in my regular one. Hoping a different version will help.

Doublechecking ... by any chance do you still have a copy of the old MobileMe control panel for Windows installed? If so, try uninstalling that. Does that clear up the Outlook errors?

(The MobileMe issue is probably more likely to produce a "MobileMe services has stopped working" message when launching Outlook, but I figure it does no harm to check with other error messages too.)

As a follow-up to my original post... I haven't found a solution yet.

I tried searching for an earlier version of iCloud Control Panel but could only find an earlier version for Vista (instead of Win 7).

I thought of another possible solution...

Suggested Solution 7: Keep the copy of calendar and contacts on Outlook (back up first), and erase everything on iCloud. Then reinstall iCloud CP and sync.

- Back up MS Outlook calendar, address book (export to another format e.g. csv) etc.

- Uninstall iCloud Control Panel for Windows

- Log in to iCloud.com and delete all calendar and address book entries

- Reboot

- Install iCloud Control Panel for Windows

- Sync iCloud CP with MS Outlook

Result: Untested (but I successfully used this method to resolve issue with a previous version of iCloud CP months ago, I think)

My Interim Solution

For now, I have dumped MS Outlook and iCloud Control Panel. I am falling into the trap set by Apple; I think they want us to dump MS Outlook. ;-)

  • I am using iCloud.com (the website) to enter Calendar entries, write Notes, and edit Address Book entries on my PC. It syncs directly with my iPhone.
  • Instead of using PhotoStream... I now sync photos between my iPhone and PC using DropBox (Camera Upload auto-sync function). The silver lining is, DropBox renames the photo files by date and time of the photo taken, and . It is BRILLIANT!!! Photos are now organised chronologically, instead of Apple's rather stupid IMGxxx.JPG file format.
  • The downsides:
  • (1) iCloud Calendar is not as fast, customisable and user-friendly as MS Outlook. For example, I cannot categorise (and use different colour for each category) calendar items (e.g. Personal, Work, Must-Attend etc.). Tips: I installed Safari browser for the specific purpose of using iCloud. Safari chews up less CPU and RAM than other browsers. And I have my iCloud.com password saved and iCloud.com set as my Home Page. So when I open Safari, I am at my iCloud.com Calendar. This allows me to use Chrome and Firefox for other online browsing purposes, without accidentally closing my calendar.
  • (2) I need to activate DropBox on my iPhone for my iPhone photos to auto-sync* (upload to DropBox). When my iPhone automatically powers off, the upload stops. So I have to switch my iPhone to not automatically switch off and lock. * There is an automatic sync function on DropBox. If your location changes (GPS must be enabled for DropBox), DropBox will auto-upload the photos in your Camera Roll. I am not sure if it actually works.

Hope that helps people in the same predicament.

I am having the exact same issue, I have googled this and it looks like this is a well known problem (but you have documented it so thoroughly, for which I thank you!). I am frustrated beyond belief. There doesn't seem to be a solution or an update to iCloud control panel in sight.

I am now searching for some way to import all my exchange contacts into iCloud because my org is considering disabling the ability for us to connect our iPhones directly to the exchange server. Their secure mobile management utility - while functionally superior to the native email and calendar apps - doesn't sync contacts to the phone directly. Which means every text I get now is just a random phone number.

Apple, why? Why won't you understand that as much as you wish it weren't so, there are Microsoft Exchange users that want to use an iPhone! Why can't you two play nice in the playground?

Same issue. Very frustrating. Detente is the right answer. Apple, keep innovating and winning over MSFT users. Please DO NOT penalize us!

This is ridiculous. I am a consultant. I have several calendars in Outlook (convenient) and wouldn't it be great to have my iCloud calendar both visible and sync'd there? It USED TO BE SO. Then, no. Regression is the worst kind of error/fail. Is anyone from Apple monitoring this board? Do they care? It's your reputation, folks.
