iTunes 11.1.4 freezes after connecting iDevices

I'm using iTunes 11.1.4 on Windows 7 64-bit. When I connect iPhone 4 7.0.4 and iPad 4 7.0.4, iTunes freezes and I have to end the procces through task manager. Or if I disconnect the iDevices, iTunes just show a message that hte device was detected but it cannot be synced. Even when I click on Preferences in Edit menu when there is no iDevice connected to the computer, it freezes. I re-installed the iTunes and I tried to Repair it but there was no difference.

iPhone 4, iOS 7

I was just having this issue as well. I tried the top answers to this and no luck. Just to be clear, I am on Windows 7 and just did a fresh install on a new SSD drive. iTunes was running perfectly on my old version of Windows 7.

When I would download iTunes and "run as administrator" only iTunes itself would actually install. Then when I opened the program, a popup would say that Apple Application Support was not found. Well then why didn't you install it with iTunes, Apple?

Long story short, the fix is this...

Once downloaded and saved, (do not "run") use a program like win-rar to extract the files to another folder. Win-rar was free wherever I found it. You extract by right clicking your download and hitting the proper message. Go into the newly created folder and starting at the top, begin installing the software. Go figure, Apple Application Support is in there! Make sure you install everything including Bonjoir, Update, and the x86 versions even if you have a 64 bit computer. Once everything in there has been installed including iTunes, you should be set. If not, completely remove all iTunes restated software in control panel including Bonjoir, Update, AAS, etc... Once removed, go through the above steps again but in the order they are in that extracted file.

Where I got into trouble and was having the freezing issue as mentioned was not installing the Update program and the x86 versions. Once I did that, everything worked fine.

I hope this helps someone trying to put a movie on their iPad or iPhone for their kids to watch in the car or on a plane.

Created a profile just to say thanks polarbear2025, so "Thanks!" 🙂. Been searching (and reinstalling) all day with no luck. Followed your advice and it worked first time. 🙂

For others: My problem was iTunes would freeze when an iPhone was plugged into it OR when I tried to access the "preferences". I am using Win10 64bit system. Following all of the official advice to reinstall did nothing to resolve the problem, either did other advice I tried when Googling the problem. Following the advice above sorted it straight away, even without a restart!

Thanks again polarbear2025! 🙂

I have found a fix for WINDOWS because most of these responses are for apple and he is asking as a windows user.

STEP 1 - Go into programs and features and uninstall anything made by "Apple Inc"

STEP 2 - Using Winzip or 7zip extract the itunes installer into any folder in your documents.

STEP 3 - Run everything in the folder one at a time and then run the ADMINSETUP as an administrator.

STEP 4 - Open Itunes and witness the non-freezing. I honestly don't know why this worked. Probably because I installed both the 32bit and 64bit programs.

THIS SHOULD WORK.

Jason - I'm not sure you're understanding the complete situation, if it's what I'm experiencing. You can't sync, load files to iPad, play music, download podcasts, etc. because iTunes freezes when you open it. Period. 11.1.4 DOES.NOT.WORK. I have to force close it. Apple put out a bad update.

It's not just about syncing, which is obviously a huge problem because I use my iPad for teaching but now I can't get my files onto the device, but the whole app doesn't work. iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac - nothing will work if the app freezes as soon as you open it. When is Apple going to fix it? Macbook Pro 10.7.5

Jason, Why would you make that recommendation? Have you tried it? Has anyone ever posted back, "wow, thanks, that fixed it". I haven't found such a reply and I have read a lot of posts on this issue. Apple advocates all seem to recommend that same set of procedures, yet no one attests that it works. iTunes on one of my Apple computers suddenly freezes when I connect my iPhone or iPad to it. I wasted a tremendous amount of time performing all of those steps to no avail. I see this problem has been going on for years. It's time for Apple to dump iTunes and make a new media app that that provides the simple functionality we need for our devices including AppleTV. We don't need a store built into the app. And, it's time for people to not provide the status quo response for this issue. Just an opinion from one of many frustrated iTunes users.

Jason, your "solution" does not fix the problem.

Like others here:

if I open iTunes with my iPhone connected (even wirelessly), iTunes freezes.

If I connect my iPhone (even wirelessly) while iTunes is open and functioning, iTunes freezes.

iTunes is a mess right now, and it needs to be stripped down to the bolts. While I appreciate that Apple wants to integrate all of its media experiences, it's not doing it well, and since I can't even sync or connect my iPhone, I'd say Apple is going backwards. Why in the world would I buy media I can't sync?

Hi geraldfromfpo /xytarwest,,

i tried OtterStCatch suggestion and it worked straight way. thank you. I too was having an issue finding the view library option and here is how you do it.

choose Home from the Finder’s Go menu (Go > Home);

Still in the Finder, choose View > Show View Options

Near the bottom of the resulting View-Options palette is a setting called Show Library Folder. Enable this option. Your Library folder is immediately visible.

then follow OtterStCatch comments below.

thanks
