I am computer technician and even though I know that what you listed is not a reason it is not working, I did go thoroughly through your points, one-by-one only to find out that it still doesn't work. It's my friends iphone5 that he locked with code that he no longer can guess. I am sure it is not stolen since I was with him when he bought it and his picture can still be seen on the locked screen. He tried it on 2 and I tried it on 4 different computers (3 of which are often and regularly used for iPhone updating). I have to say that problems with update and restore are very annoying and extremely often. One of two iphones is making problems no matter what you do. USB ports have NO effect, cables are either working or not and also have NO effect, hosts setting sometimes DO cause failed update, but that is it. Other than that, Apple generally doesn't do good job updating people's devices. Updating to earlier versions of software is completely different subject....

If you find out what happened I would love to hear it. I have the same issue and not too happy! Error 9 on Mac and 3004 on PC.

64 Gig, white iPhone dead at the restore window after the perpetual apple start screen launching non-stop prior.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me, and it seems like I am out some pretty hefty cash for not even a year's worth of use! Thus, I do believe my only option is a refurbished iPhone if this one is fried! After taking good care of mine, it really stinks to have to trade it in when the issue seems to be happening to more people than it should! What gives? I have an appointment tomorrow with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store which is over an hour away from home. Wish me luck, Ha! 😕

Soooo after being stuck with error (9) for maybe 12 hours and trying every thing i could find on the net for a solution i finally got my phone restored and working. I offer this only in an attempt to help others but make no gurantes warranties or otherwise as to the success of others. Additionally had i been living in a region where visiting an Apple genius bar was an option id have tried that first. So what i did.....

Actually a couple of things and im not sure which was the actual solution nor am i willing to brick my phone to attempt to isolate the fix.

First i opened the phone...i.e pivotted the screen assembly away from the case.

then with the use of a heat gun set to 650 degrees C at low speed i heat the exposed board dock connector components battery connector components etc... being careful not to focus on anyone area too much that i overheat and damage anything.....basically i just warmed things up....

I then plugged in he phone to my Mac, plugged in my earpods and switched the phone to vibrate mode (like i said i did a few things) and hit restore on my Mac.

to my surprise the restore worked and i have my phone again......i was this close to throwing it in the trash and counting my losses. Hope this helps someone. remember dont go crazy with the heat gun and do at your own risk. Good Luck

AncAinu - That totally worked!! I just spent hours on restoring my daughters iPod this morning only to realize I had a cable issue. My husband ran out and bought a new cable and sure enough it appeared that the IPod was about to restore (note - it had been stuck in recovery mode for weeks). I thought I was in the clear and in the end I ended up with "error 9". I came to this forum as a last ditch effort and was seriously ready to call it a day and accept that the restoration was a lost cause. I saw your note about the audio jack and thought this is it, my last try. I attached the ear buds and the restore went through immediately. I don't know why this works or how you figured it out BUT....THANKS!!!
