Macbook suddenly started running very slow.

I have a Macbook Unibody 2009 with an 8gb RAM and 1 TB HD upgrade running Mavericks. It was running fine until a few days ago, and now it's running unbearably slow.

Lex (or anybody), can you help? Here's my Etrecheck report. I didn't realize CleanMyMac was bad until reading some of the horror stories in these forums, so I'm prepared for the *** chewing to come.... Any help would be deeply appreciated.

There are a lot of apps that I would not have on my computer if I had a choice.

First uninstall CleanMyMac: start CleanMyMac and on the left side there is an Uninstaller (about 6 or 7 in the menu list. Run that.

After the uninstall, restart the mac and empty the trash bin.

See if that already solves the problem.

Run another etrecheck list for us, to see if there are any remnants left.

Hi Lex,

In the event you did not read it already: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5873099?start=25&tstart=25

Furthermore, the effects of having used CleanMyMac or similarly categorized junk to alter or delete required operating system files, components of them, or other software cannot be reversed without reinstalling OS X and the affected software from backups or their original sources.

Anything amiss? Again, thanks for your help.

LG

Feb 20, 2014 12:34 AM in response to lanntairglas

LG: about the rest:

a. Ram and disk more than enough.

b. there are a few apps that I do not have much experience with:

Smoothmouse/Steermouse, GPGtools, Blackblaze, Citrix:

can you explain what they do and why you installed those?

c. Is there a need for the Logitec software? And Garmin?

d. Why not throw out Flip4Mac? A player that is the best when playing formats that you can not play normally is VLC (http://www.videolan.org).

e. What do you use the Kaplan Netscape plugin for?

f. Is VMware still installed, and Rosettastone?

Lex

Feb 20, 2014 5:24 PM in response to lanntairglas

Hey Lex,

After unintalling CMM2, the Macbook seemed to speed up temporarily but bogged down again when I tried to watch a YouTube video. In general, video streaming--using either Firefox or Safari and regardless of website--seems to exacerbate the sluggishness, which then persists even after all browsers are closed.

I thought I should mention one other associated symptom: "bluetooth not available" appears intermittently on startup. It happened again today, and I reset the SMC, which cleared it.

Regarding the other apps you mentioned, here's a summary:

Smoothmouse: modifies mouse/trackpad cursor speed and acceleration curves. I was never able to get used to the Apple defaults on these.

Steermouse: previous, different program for the same purpose, supposedly uninstalled but apparently not completely. I think I have now found and removed the remnant file.

GPGtools: Mail plug-in that provides PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) email encryption.

Backblaze: online backup service. This is configured to run only when manually directed, not continuously in the background.

Citrix: client module that allows remote access to electronic medical record systems like Epic and PowerChart (I'm a medical student, and Citrix was provided to us by our school.)

Logitech: just the mouse software that came with my Logitech MX 1000 mouse. I mostly use the Apple trackpad now instead, so maybe I could delete that.

Garmin: various applications from the Garmin website for updating the firmware, maps, etc. on my Garmin Forerunner and Nuvi devices.

Flip4Mac: I uninstalled this one as you suggested using its own uninstaller program.

Kaplan Netscape plugin: used to access Kaplan's online question bank for board exam studying. I haven’t opened this for many months.

VMware Fusion: I just uninstalled this using their online instructions for a complete uninstall, but they referred to a directory that I don’t have, so unless that’s a new Mavericks change, I am missing a “Library” directory under my “Home” (username) directory.

Rosetta Stone: still using it to learn Spanish.

I tried to remove the CMM2 remnant you mentioned, but since no “Library” directory is listed under my Home directory, I couldn’t find that file.

One other observation is that most of these applications have been present, not used much, and not causing obvious problems for a while. The only ones that were active recently were CMM2 (multiple “cleans”), Smoothmouse and Backblaze.

Here’s a new Etre report.

Sorry if I'm missing something simple about the Library folder. I looked in Macintosh\Library\LaunchAgents and Macintosh\System\Library\LaunchAgents. There was no macpaw/CleanMyMac entry in either folder (or in the LaunchDaemon folders), and there was no Macintosh\Users\(Me)\Library folder shown at all.

Thanks again, Lex (and also thanks to the Ayn fan). I really appreciate your time.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Do as Linc asks.

and

Smoothmouse: if it does that, it digs deep in OSX. I never heard of it.

Steermouse: ok, make it gone.

GPGtools: if you absolutely need it, check the Mavericks compatibility.

Citrix, same.

Logitech: afaik you do not need that to use the mouse.

Garmin, check the Mavericks compatibility.

Kaplan: delete it, you may reinstall when needed.

VMware: see my "Library" post

Rosettastone: check the Mavericks compatibility.

Lex,

Okay, I have deleted Steermouse, GPGTools, Logitech, Kaplan and the remnants of CMM2 and VMWare. I uninstalled Citrix and reinstalled their latest version which is certified compatible with Mavericks.

After trying to duplicate the problem by streaming an HD video on Bing (so that I could post the Console log), my Macbook decided just to shut itself off outright. The upper edge (above the keyboard) was too hot to touch. (I've been using an external monitor with the Macbook's monitor closed but never had an overheating problem before....)

Anyway, I restarted it successfully after a few minutes and "Bluetooth was not available," so I shut it down, reset the SMC, and started it back up. Now it is up, but crawling. I didn't capture the exact time of the auto-shutdown because I wasn't sure what had happened. When I looked in Console, there were--as Linc warned--a million entries, and I didn't want to cut and paste a bunch of clutter here and still possibly miss the critical moment. Instead, since the computer is obviously sick right now, I just copied the last few minutes, and here they are:

If this doesn't capture what Linc needs, just let me know and I'll try again. I can also post another Etre report if you want to see it. Right now, I'm headed to Target to buy a 1 TB external drive and start backing up.

Thanks again for all of your help.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.

6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter

exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

10. The test will take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.

11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
