1st Gen iPod Touch "An unknown error occurred (1)"

First one iPod Touch 1st Generation device wouldn't sync (a few weeks back) and now today an older iPod Touch 1st Generation device has also failed to sync, both with iTunes 11.1.4.

Connecting the devices with the USB cable that has just charged an iPhone 4s to the latest MacBook Pro Retina returns Ipod Recovery Mode. No other USBs are attached to the laptop.

Clicking Restore Ipod returns "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)

Restarting the laptop has no effect

Restarting an iPod just brings up the cable connect display

Has the latest version of iTunes put an end to my iPod Touches 1st Generation or have i genuinely been unlucky to have them both fail within a short space of time OR, hopefully, there is a workaround.

Apple Support were unable to assist by 'phone with "An unknown error occurred (1)" on the first device, and nor could Genius Bar at my store this week.

Both devices are on 1.1.15 Operating System for Ipod Touch. I appreciate there is a version 3.x.x but I cannot get this on to the iPods

Any help would be greatly received

- Place the iPod in DFU mode and then restore

How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings

- Try on another computer

- Try another cable

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I am going through the same problem and i have been trying for hours now to find the firmware iPod1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw with no luck.

any advices?

I am having a similar problem- same error. I have a 1st generation iPod touch, and have tried using two MBPs, one from 2009 and one from 2014, both running Yosemite, and with the latest or one previous version of iTunes. Even using DFW mode, (or at least following the directions to get there- which gives me the plug-iTunes logo), and with an alt+restore command on both recommended files I receive the same error that the iPod cannot be restored due to an unknown error (1). I refuse to believe this is a hardware problem as it never happened until a week ago when I tried to use restore for the first time, intentionally just to wipe everything from the iPod. It wiped it, but can't finish the process in restoring it. Please help!

Maybe you can inform the guys at the Apple Genius Bar in Amsterdam!!!

My Ipod 1st Generation broke down after I tried to update to the latest version of iOS.

After many rescue attempts I had to go the the Genius Bar and they told me that my iPod

couldn't be fixed anymore! It was dead like a dodo. 😟

Thanks to you my iPod has risen from its grave!

i have the same problem, first i have ios on ipod but can't connect on ios, now i put ipod i DFU and restore and now a don't have ios and can't put new 😟

I had the same issue, I was downloading iPod1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw but the browser was renaming it to iPod1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.zip

Solution was to change the file extension from .zip back to .ipsw after download is complete. If you're having to unzip any files, you're going down the wrong path.

Kudos to Silwadi for his post. I logged a ticket with Apple support, who more or less hinted at doing something like this to resolve as everything they had me try (which was squarely within the bounds of their support model, of course) was useless. I could have either gone to the genius bar for them to claim "hardware failure" in order to sell me a new device, or solve the issue with the help of the community. I chose option 2.

I'm having trouble locating and downloading the iPod1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore file. Any suggestions out there? I'm having the same problem with my 1st gen iPod touch.
