Phone won't turn on after Apple update 7.0.6. Any ideas of the problem and solution?
iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.4, Updated to 7.0.6
Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
If this does not work, try to connect in recovery mode, explained here:
After to read all this post and with a lot of fear I decided to update to 7.0.6, I have a 5S silver 64GiB.
What I did was:
- download the patch to iTunes
- plug in the iPhone
- make a backup
- update the iPhone from iTunes.
et voila!
it worded good for me.
This is the way I did the upgrade to 7.0.6
Two night's ago my girlfriend charged her phone when it was low on battery.
She checked it later, and it didn't turn on.
We tried all of the holding button tricks. Then we followed apple's instructions for factory resetting it. Went to iTunes, plugged in the cord into the phone, held the home button and plugged into the computer. iTunes realized we were trying to factory reset. It asked us if we are sure. It downloaded the update. As I was extracting it it kept on getting an Error 40. I read more from Apple's site. I tried a few more times. Made sure my apple was updated.
Nothing worked. The phone is still a brick. The girlfriend is going to Apple today to meet with geniuses. Hopefully they will fix it.
And of course it happened soon after downloading the system update. But it didn't happen right away. Maybe a day or two later.
I tried it a second time last night - it worked! 🙂
The difference from the first try: download first, then backup through iTunes and then update the phone.
40 min download time
10 min for update
This time everything was in place. No "welcome to your new iPhone" message. No need to restore from backup like the last update to 7.0.5
A little bit strange though ...
Same here, just clicked to update on my 5s and came back to it a few minutes later totally black and not responding or starting, now in process of a reset and can i say im sooo stoked to have to reset EVERYTHING and spend probably a couple hours on this that I will never get back in my life.... seriously apple, test these things or myself and people will start leaving the brand, this isnt just a minor hiccup, youre costing people significant amounts of time on a device that is supposed to eliviate time spenditure.
Let me know what the Apple store says about your girlfriend's phone (which iphone model btw?). What happened with her phone sounds exactly like my experience, except my phone turned off a couple hours after trying to update, and I got an "unknown error (9)" when trying to restore. My phone wasn't under warranty any more so Apple store told me I was out of luck and just needed to buy a new phone.
So it seems most of these so-called "bricked" iphone cases are not actually bricked. People are at least able to restore and eventually have a functioning phone again. What I'm wondering is if and how Apple is going to respond to all the cases where even DFU or any kind of restore isn't possible, and this update truly bricked our phones.
So I am sure there are quite a few more of these examples, mine is one of them and I think of myself as an innocent bystander. My phone was fine for the most part, had gotten a little spill on it, nothing that had ever fried it before. It was working after allowing it to sit for a while and dry out and when I tried it again it was blank. This was not new to me as I've had friends who've dropped theirs in water or worse and the phone comes back, and mine was going to when I started the restore process, the only difference was that I was only given one option... update the phone in order to restore it. I was cornered and there wasn't anything I could do but update it. At least as far as I know. So here we are March 1st and I still have a $700 brick.
The worst of all of this is what if I needed to call the police or an ambulance, I don't have a home phone and as a matter of fact I don't know to many people who do anymore. This is bad. I hope Apple will release something as I've tried everything and nothing works. What's up with using the original cable that came with phone??? lol That one really got under my skin.

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone 4s after this update -- a restore is not possible, and the only option I was presented with at the Apple Store was an expensive replacement. I can't believe that Apple isn't willing to do anything for customers affected by this issue, when it was their security flaw that instigated their patch which bricked our phones! What can be done to send a clear message? Is it likely that Apple Stores will be provided a way of restoring phones rendered dead by this update?
For anyone whose phone is truly bricked and unable to be restored through DFU, etc: speak with an Apple Store manager, or call tech support and get connected to a Senior Advisor!
After my first trip to the Apple Store, where I was told I'd have to buy a costly replacement, I called up Apple Tech Support at 800-692-7753. I was connected with someone who ran me through all the steps I'd already tried (hard reset, DFU mode), and then asked to be put through to their manager, as my issue was the result of Apple's update and I wanted to report/rectify this. After hearing that the update bricked my phone, he put in a free out-of-warranty repair/replacement attached to my case number (Customer Satisfaction Code). I went back to the store with my case number, and about 40 minutes later walked out with a new replacement iPhone 4S.
Awesome! I gave my bricked phone to an IT friend of mine to try to fix it for me, but as soon as I get it back I'll give Apple tech support a call. Thanks for sharing. That's great news!
I have had the same happen to my iphone 4s when updating to 7.0.6.
I have followed all steps to restore the phone via itunes on my macbook pro but nothing works.
This phgone is now dead due to the apple software update and has worked perfectly for 2 years.
Will apple replace this free of charge
?
Same happened to me, I have an iPhone 4 which was working great for the past 3 years. I did the update over OTA, update was successsfuly. I check my firmware version stated 7.0.6. Thought every went well. I turn off the phone. Next day when i tried to turn it on, I couldnt get it to boot up. Totally black. I plugged into the cable and still nothing. Searched the internet, that says hold the home and connect. Saw itunes logo. after that tried to restore. I got error 1200. Tried 3 macs , changed cables, tried different ports. Download the older firmware, beta firmware. Tried everything, no luck. Now my iphone is just a brick thanks to Apple's update.
I have a problem where the iOS 7.0.6 update downloads and then fails the install. It has done this repetitively. My ipad still runs, but shows running 7.0.4 and still wants to update but fails.
Same hereehere! Tried OTA update and suddenly my phone whent all black! Problem is i don't have a very recent backup and want to recover some of the photos in the phone. It ***** to have your phone bricked on an official firmware update from Apple! I had just returned from 2 weeks holiday trip and all photos are gone now!!!😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠
Wild Bilbo, I too was unable to successfully update to 7.0.6 after multiple attempts (on my iPhone 4s). Afterward my phone continued to work as normal, but unfortunately for me, a couple hours later it turned off and hasn't been able to turn fully on since. I hope your iPad doesn't eventually suffer the same fate. If I were you I'd count myself blessed and hold off on trying to update until the 7.1 update comes out (supposedly any day now according to Macrumors). That's what I plan on doing if I'm ever able to get my phone fixed or replaced. The Apple Store I went to (that failed to fix my phone and told me to buy a new one) surprisingly called me back to come in for a follow up appointment. I'm going in tomorrow so we'll see what happens.
Giorgo, really sorry to hear that. I lost 6 months worth of photos once due to bad software, so I can relate. (Ironically it was while I was trying to backup my photos that I lost them.) It was infuriating and depressing, but I definitely learned a lesson... never give technology the benefit of the doubt (well, if at all possible). Just for next time, I advise you to not update your OS until you have everything backed up first. I use the Dropbox app to automatically upload and backup my camera roll. It's pretty convenient.
Updated my iPhone 5s to 7.0.6 and the phone won't turn back on.
