No internet except 32bit Chrome & Terminal

What would cause only 64bit software to quit connecting to the internet.

Recently upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.1. Everything worked great for a couple weeks. Installed Adobe Creative Cloud two nights ago. After it installed I went to download lightroom & photoshop but it wouldn't connect to the internet. Most of my browsers wouldn't connect either, Safari, Firefox, Opera, The App Store, Software Update, Thunderbird.

Chrome connects just fine but it's the only 32 bit software I have, Terminal connects just fine too, I can ping google with no problem. I rebooted to repair mode last night and the repair mode will download a new install of mavericks for me to do a repair install but that will take over 19 hours of downloading when my only problem is the internet.

My Iphone connects just fine as well. So does my roommates windows PCs with both 32bit and 64bit software.

I've tried everything internet fix I could find, manually setting DNS settings to OpenDNS or to 8.8.8.8.

I've tried deleting the files under /Library/Preferences//SystemConfiguration for the NetworkInterfaces and preferences plist.

I've tried removing all my preferred network settings and rebooting and reconnecting

I've tried removing all my adapters, the wifi & ethernet under network system settings and rebooting and adding them back.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

There are no reports of ANY differences in operation that are limited to either 32-bit or 64-bit Applications on the Mac Pro forums that I can recall.

But that package you installed is fairly new, perhaps it has clobbered something essential.

Have you done a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) ?

I really don't want to spend 19 hours downloading the repair install of mavricks

That estimate is bogus. For most folks, the download is done in an hour. If it says 19 hours again, cancel and try again.

I've ran disk repair several times,

And there is some such setting because I have the feature of chrome working but nothing else working and my Mac saying it's not connecting to the ISP but is connecting to the router, yet chrome still browses just fine, and it's a setting that isn't ignored in safe mode but is ignored in the repair boot version of safari, that should narrow it down quite a bit. I can even log onto my modem from safari and Firefox, they're just not making it to the internet. I've rebooted and factory reset my modem and everything else in the house connects just fine.

Take issue with your calling a clean install a terrible option. It is far far from ideal for your specific situation (slow internet, no backup) but regardless of how you get it fixed, you should do 2 things - save a OSX installer on a thumb drive so you won't have to deal with a DSL internet recovery and setup a basic time machine so when unfortunate happens, your down time is minimized.

Last I checked, google chrome doesn't include an App Store for Mac and that's the only thing that connects to the internet outside of a repair boot. And last time I went to setup a time machine it told me I needed a disk with 4 1/2 terrabytes free, I don't own a disk that big. And I can't download anything real fast, certainly not 5 gb worth of data. It's been downloading for over an hour now and it's maybe 10% done. I seriously wish I could just hop on a PC at work and download it and bring it home and do a repair install.

Well, a repair install fixed it. It finished downloading while I was asleep so I didn't get to interrupt it and back up the install. :( but we have our daily lightning storm rolling in here in Florida so I had to unplug everything. I didn't get to install Lightroom yet. But when I logged in to my computer, safari and the creative cloud both logged in just fine. I'm glad it's fixed but I'm really sad we never found what the actual problem was..

I have a similiar issue, running 10.9 on a new imac 27 inch ( bought Jan 2014 ).

I can't connect to the internet via any browser I try ( Chrome and Sarafi ), it just says connecting but never does.

I have several local servers on my network which I also can not access via chrome or safari.

I can ssh into the and ping google.com, also I have two other macs in the house on the same network which have no issues at all.

I'm running a virus scan but nothing is showing up.

I've even ran Assit Me in network preferences and it says all it working fine.

thoughts?
