You need your Mac's original Applications Install DVD to run AHT, but it's not worth the effort.

Forget about what you can't do, do what you can. Start by resetting the SMC followed by booting Safe Mode. If the CPU is not abnormally burdened in Safe Mode then the cause is likely to be one or more the hundred or so system modifications that exist. Methodically address that problem by doing what I already suggested: research their individual vendors for support, or uninstall them.

Regarding heat, the system was pretty warm and the battery is not in the best condition, being from 2009.

A battery at its end of life can also be causing the problem. Five years is not terribly old but are there other reasons for concluding it's not in the best condition?

Feb 23, 2014 7:56 PM in response to shokk

What am I looking for on this?

The only way I know of to run the hardware test is from the installation disc. If you don't have the discs, you can order replacements from Apple customer service. Alternatively, you can take the machine to an Apple Store for testing. But the best option is to skip the hardware testing for now and rule out the other possibilities that I mentioned.

Feb 23, 2014 8:07 PM in response to John Galt

I reset SMC and for good measure, the PRAM too. I'll have to wait for this to crop up again, but it seems like sometimes the reboot helps and sometimes it doesn't. So there are times where Safe Mode will be ok abd my next boot into regular mode will be ok too. Like right now, I didn't uninstall anything, but it's working perfectly after the SMC and PRAM reset. Without a diagnostic to be sure, it seems I can't point the finger at a particular component. I'll be sure to reset these when it crops up again.

Regarding the battery, I am only going by age. It could be that it's only in its mid years, but I've also seen some that blew the bottom panel off when it expanded 3 times it's size. should I be cautious on this and replace it?

For the other fixes, as John said, there are too many to test one by one or in combinations. I'll keep an eye out for any that might just in CPU themselves and see if they correspond when kernel_task spikes.

Before doing anything else, wait and see whether there's a recurrence. If there is, see below.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Use this at your own risk. It worked for me.

Basic Procedure:

1- Click in the apple logo on the upleft corner, select "About This Mac".

2- Click in "More Info".

3- Click in "System Report".

4- Take note of "Model Identifier".

5- Create a new folder called "Recovery_Kernel_Task".

6- Select Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

7- Click the mouse right button at that file and select "Show Package Contents"

8- Open the folder Contents/Resources.

9- Look for the Model Identifier in step 4.

10- Move the file to the folder you've created, if you need to restore the file.

11- Check the folder in step 8 has 49 files instead of 50 (original files).

12- Restart the computer and be happy!

I've been having the same issue. I have a 2009 MBP with the original battery (10.9.3/4 GB RAM). I noticed that this happened when on my home network, but not when away from my network. I just unplugged the power cord and the external second monitor, and within minutes, the fan slowed down. I then plugged my second monitor back in, and it remained quiet. So I'm assuming it's the battery, given the discussion above.

Off to the Mac shop for a new battery, I guess!

Jul 1, 2014 11:41 AM in response to Eric Root

Let the genius bar guys run the diags for you, or run them yourself.

I had this problem on a 2009 MBP17 and it was either the battery or DC board, but something was getting VERY hot in there.

I'm now on a new rMBP15 and have all but forgotten this since the thing barely uses more than one core.

New battery costs $50-65 and new DC board is $60. The battery swap would be a simple fix, but replacing the DC board is a PITA because you need to take almost the entire MBP apart. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+17-Inch+Unibody+MagSafe+DC-In+Board+Rep lacement/3442

I had to struggle to keep the Mac Geniuses on the subject of kernel_task but once I did that, they came up with the following solution. That was yesterday. So far so good.

1. Move everything out of the following System directories:

- System/Library/LaunchAgents

- System/Library/LaunchDaemons

- System/Library/StartupItems

The first two folders listed will subsequently be automatically repopulated, hopefully without any third-party items that might interfere with kernel_task. The third had several third-party items but has since remained empty over several reboots. Because my kernel_task went amok regardless of login, these System folders are most highly suspect.

Move everything out of the following User directory:

- ~/Library/LaunchAgents

Only one Adobe file has since been repopulated to this folder but again, so far so good. Because my kernel_task went amok regardless of login, this User folder is least suspect.

My AddressBookSourceSync process has since been very busy, albeit without grinding my CPU to a near halt as did kernel_task. I suspect it is trying to redo work that might have been undone or disrupted by clearing out those startup directories. So far AddressBookSourceSync has been very good about what it does, posing no apparent performance impact.
