Porsche Design External Hard Drive for Time Machine back-up

This is what I am looking to buy for my back up: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Porsche-Design-External-9000296/dp/B008SA69L8/ref=sr _1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1393398362&sr=1-10&keywords=porsche+design.

But this is not available on online Apple Store. Only "desktop drives" are available. What is the difference between "desktop drive" and "external drive?"

Also, how do these Porsche Design hard drives rank in terms of reliability and longevity?

Do I need to install LaCie software to use this hard drive for back-up? Or is it possible to directly use Time Machine to use this hard drive for back-up?

Lastly, how does password protection work? Does the LaCie software have to be installed to take advantage of this?

all HD are powered, obviously

2.5" require 5volts

3.5" require 12 volts

they get that power via USB, or thunderbolt, or same as internally mounted.

you didnt hear "different things" about HD power here in this thread.

A faster drive is a faster drive,

HD can be 5400 rpm, or 7200 rpm, and server grade drives at up to 10,000+ RPM

90% of the previous mentioned HD are 5400RPM, except for the Hitachi 2.5" drive mentioned which is 7200RPM

really theres very little diff. between the two in any noticed speeds.

Ah, I see. Well most people dont study that subject.

Ive heard 1000 insane answers and statements from people everywhere talking about hard drives.

just crazy things, untrue things, bad things, horrible advice, and harmful advice.

people dont know, which is ok, but they pass on horrible information to others sometimes, which is no good.

Any specific question will be promptly and accurately answers on the subject of hard drives you have.

I forward computers arent even as close as important as ones data someone spends endless 1000s of hours, years, and decades on.

Ultimately we spend 1000's of hours creating and saving data, however we spend a great deal of time protecting our computers and notebooks, with cases and insurance, accessories and upgrades,...but most give little to no consideration to their data which is the most important. In the thought of what a notebook costs vs. what 1000's of hours of work creating data is worth, the computer itself is worthless by comparison in cost. Therefore much more due prudence is necessitated in the thought towards protecting your data as was spent in concern over the computer itself.

Desktop drive is typically meant a 3.5" , as such it cannot get enough power from USB like a 2.5" does

so YES, all 3.5" ("desktop") need / use a charger / adapter for power

USB can power a 2.5" drive since they need very little power

3.5" are bigger beasts that need a wall/ socket charger / adapter.

All 3.5" "desktop" hard drives come with this charger/adapter.

"has to" be connected all the time? Nope, thats wrong, dont have to.

Generally OK to do so? Yes.

Time machine can be set to automatically backup, or you can just manually do it with one click . So yes.

External HD can be used by Time machine to automatically backup.

Time machine doesnt care if the hard drive is external or internal or 2.5" or 3.5" when it comes to automatic backups. It all works.

any hard drive can be carried around, even naked ones.

However naked hard drives are fragile and prone to being squished and shocked from static, so special information needs to be had to know HOW to carry around naked hard drives.

A common user has a 2.5" hard drive to pack around

As said, nobody wants to pack around a huge and heavy 3.5" ('desktop') drive. Though you CAN, nobody wants to

2 people told me this:

Desktop drive has power adaptor, so it has to be connected to computer all the time. Time Machine will automatically back up at scheduled back-up time. With external drive, it has to be done manually, but external drive can be carried around.

So this is false as well?

It's gibberish, so vague it is useless. Some externals have power adaptors, many don't.

SEVENTY ONE

My "redacted" post did not target you in any way. I simply quoted your post :

Feb 26, 2014 2:23 AM (in response to mrq0604)

" Which is the better? As I see your question, they are one and the same thing."

And then referred to csoud's post ( two hours later, excluding a simultaneous posting ) ". desktop drive or external drive? They are the same. "

as being "useless".

Still wondering what all the fuss was about.

Your post, seventy one, was thoughtful and informative, as usual.

P.S. : plotinus : this also answers your question :

" I missed everything you just said, something happened? who what where? "

P.P.S.: I ,sadly, guess mrq0406 doesn't realise the value of the time and knowledge he got you to put in this thread, P.V., but i can say quite a few of the 700+ of those who've read it are most grateful to you. From the beginning, you could have responded angrily, even arrogantly : he deserved it,a few times round. Yet you kept the high road, and we all benefited from your patience ! Case study for exemplary answer.
