When I start Mail, there is forever the spinning beach ball. Only exit is to force quit. When I deactivate the Gmail-Account, everything is fine. When I reactivate it: spinning beach ball.
I deleted the account from preferences and re-created the account: spinning beach ball, again.
I repaired permission: no success.
What coud I try next?

I confirm that it's working just by removing labels with "/"
I can now synchronise my gmail account in all my macs in 10.9.2 !

I can't believe how Apple QA has let that one alive since Mavericks was released last summer.
Mail doesn't hang anymore and is fetching my mail, thanks !
YES now its O.K. Everybody must rename subfolders etc. [Gmail]/private messges NOW ONLY: Private messages.

when I remove the "Gmail/" from any folder, that folder now disappears from my list of Gmail folders in mail.app.
If I put the "Gmail/" back then the folder shows up again in mail.app

Rename folders...
after logging into gmail.com. I select a folder, click on the arrow to see a contextual menu, then select edit. Is there something that I'm missing?
I mean only text example: my hobbies not any (gmail) only your text folder
