10.9.2: Mail hangs with Gmail

When I start Mail, there is forever the spinning beach ball. Only exit is to force quit. When I deactivate the Gmail-Account, everything is fine. When I reactivate it: spinning beach ball.

I deleted the account from preferences and re-created the account: spinning beach ball, again.

I repaired permission: no success.

What coud I try next?

The problem appeared on two iMac with the betas. With the final version I updated one with the Mac App Store, the other with the combo. Same issue on both. My colleague has it too on his MBP.

Sometimes, changing some parameters, server side on Gmail, helped a bit, but I couldn't find a way to escape that particular problem when it appeared in the last beta.

Have you also tried the full installer from the App Store? Again, this may not help and would be time consuming, but it might help. Otherwise, I'm at a loss why Apple released the following for the 10.9.2 update in their About the OS X Mavericks v10.9.2 Update. Would have been nice to have mentioned GMail as one of the "certain providers" if that one was fixed.

  • Includes general improvements to the stability and compatibility of Mail
  • Resolves an issue that prevented Mail from receiving new messages from certain providers

Ok, i've found that the cause of the problem is one specific gmail account. Two others are working fine, but the one causing it, it won't work even after removing and re-adding it. I've even tried to delete the files themselves from Library/Mail to start with a clean slate: nothing. So if anyone has an idea what to do with that account, it would be appreciated🙂

Exactly the same here : 2 rather small accounts (one Gmail, one Google apps) were added perfectly. My main big one causes Mail to choke, become unresponsive and take 100% CPU. It does seem to be doing something and to be going through it, but unacceptably slowly (under Activity Monitor, I can see Mail.app has network activity, but something on the order of 0.1MB/min)

I found this Post, looks like it helps - give it a try!

My Apple Mail is still working fine ever since I fixed it on Jan 29 with this method:

Called Apple and the tech (Jamie Dear - jamied@apple.com) gave me these instructions (for Gmail IMAP users only):

Hold down the option key and go to Go > Library > Mail and rename the Mail folder Mail.old

Again, hold down the option key and go to Go > Library > Containers > com.apple.mail and rename that folder com.apple.mail.old

And again, hold down the option key and go to Go > Library > Containers > com.apple.MailServiceAgent and rename that folder com.apple.MailServiceAgent.old

In Mail, recreate your email account.
