Mavericks 10.9.2 and MS Office crashing

Yesterday I upgraded my MacBook Pro to 10.9.2 and after that, I started having several problems. The biggest one is that now, none of the MS Office programs (Excel, Word, Power Point) are working.

When trying to open them, it shows like the fonts are updating but it only reaches 24% of the process and then they crash.

Anybody else having this problem ? Reinstalling MS Office will solve it ?

Also my Mail program is acting erraticaly.

First time I've had a problem with a system software upgrade.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I would do the following in order:

  1. Ensure that you are current with Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 software updates
  2. Press shift+command+U, start Disk Utility, and verify/repair boot drive permissions
  3. Perform a Safe Boot to remove/rebuild the font cache. Follow this with a normal boot.

If this does not resolve your Office antics, then use Microsofts uninstaller solution, and reinstall Office. Follow that with all available Office for Mac updates. Then perform step 2 above again. Re-evaluate.

I did try all the steps recommended by VikingOSX plus a couple more, but I wasn't able to make Office work.

Not only I noticed problems with Office, but also my fonts got corrupted (reason why Office wasn't wroking I guess.....), my computer memory was draining really fast to levels were it was impossible to work and the computer will stop responding. I was also suffersing of several crushes and I would have to restart the computer several times per day.

Decided to do a clean install of 10.9.0 but to my surprise, when I did download my previous copy of Maverick, it installed 10.9.2. At least with the clean install the computer its working again. Did also a fresh install of Office and now it is working. Still don't like how 10.9.2 is managing memory since it's starts draining slowly even if I'm not doing anything in the computer.

Even that the computer is stable now, is definetely much slower than it used to be.

On my new Macbook Pro Retina I have decided to stay with 10.9.0 for a while. It's running with no glitches and it's very fast. Will wait for a while and see if Apple fixes all the glitches.

In the meanwhile, don't install the update. The problems being reported are too many......

VikingOSX,

Thanks for the tips. I was able to get Powerpoint working again following your steps.

Gonzalo38...one tip on the SAFE BOOT. If you don't hold down the Shift key during power up until you click the login button (after entering your name and password at the login screen), you squelch only your login items but NOT the fonts and extensions.

I released the shift key at the login prompt...entered my password, then held down SHIFT key when I clicked the Log In. My machine booted in safe mode...and purged the FONTS and EXTENSIONS that time.

I then shutdown, rebooted normally....and Powerpoint now works.

Good Luck!

I have found that the following steps fixed the problem on 10.8 and 10.9 machines running Office 2011 with the version 14.3.9 installed.

  1. Quit Word
  2. Launch Font Book
  3. Under the "File Menu" select Restore Standard Fonts...
  4. Click Proceed
  5. Quit Font Book and Relaunch Word.

Word goes through the optimizing font step and then launches w/o errors

I've also been unsuccesful in opening my Microsoft Word 2011. I'm currently running a MacBook Air on 10.9.2, and from what I can tell, Word is the only program having trouble booting. The only other office program that I regularly use is Excel, which works fine.

Every time I go to open any word document or the program, itself, I always gives me a message that says that "Microsoft Office has encountered a problem and needs to close". When I click on more info about the issue, I get this message:

Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0

Has anybody had the same issue, or have any suggestions as to how to solve it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I eventually had to do an erase and clean install of Mavericks and then manually moving back things from my external backup. I ended up using my old Office disks and reinstalling them too. I was prompted right away to do an upgrade to 4.14.4, I think it is, which I did, and things seem to be okay. If everything else seems to be working fine except for office, consider reinstalling from the disks.

Mavericks 10.9.2 has put me in deadline crisis mode this week before a big fundraising event. EIGHT DAYS of crashes, reloads, and failures. OS 10.9.2 DOES NOT WORK WITH:

Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud

Dropbox

MS Office (Microsoft 365)

All software updates are current....or were UNTIL:

....The App Store was used as a conduit for Software Updates. THEN, a blank gray window with App Store icons lined up along the top...and NO activity.

Why don't Apple Care staff admit this unmitigated problem? They blame "third party software vendors for not maintaining compatibility." Um, that means all Apple software not developed by them...and even their own (i.e. App Store/Software Updates).

Thank you, Apple, for destroying my week. We're approaching the levels of Dell **** 2009 fast. STOP IT.

I am having the exact issue with mac office 2011 after doing the OS X Mavericks v10.9.3 update.

All of my office products crash. Looking at the error message it states "exception exc_bad_access" I went to MS and followed their recommendations to completely remove mac office 2011 and reinstall, but after that office apps still crash. I have switched to Apache's OpenOffice with no issues here.

Someone on another forum posted this service patch. Will give it a try. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en...ng=en&id=29419 1) Download Service Pack 2 Update 14.2.0 2) Close All Other Applications 3) Run The Update File 4) Restart Computer 5) Relaunch Excel 6) Done. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1359848
