10.9.2 update sleep issue with NEC monitors confirmed

After updating from Mac OS10.9.1 to 10.9.2, both my friend, who lives in another city, and I find that attempting to put our MacPros (2010, think his is a 2009 model) attached to a NEC PA 301 (mine) or PA 271 (his) series pro monitors to sleep experience a frozen screen and cursor followed about a minute later with an expected and desired sleep mode. My computer does something slightly different than his in that the background of the dock turns a golden yellow when the screen freezes. Both systems start up from sleep correctly.

If I only use my Apple 30 inch Cinema Display, the sleep mode works as expected.

Spent two hours with Apple Care (level one and level two) people that didn't have a clue what was going on. Called NEC and they had no explaination.

Any thoughts of wisdom of what is going on with the sleep issue that occurred right after we put the 10.9.2 update?

Excellent. Thank you for opening the case. This should keep the ball rolling. One of the top five most respected Mac bloggers commented to me there are only 17 people who have posted on this issue so far. I responded that most people do not want to spend $2600 for a computer and the thought of paying that much for a nice NEC monitor would be out the the question. Plus they may not be aware of this resource.

It is helpful to tell Apple that when you log into a test user account the issue still occurs. It is a systemic problem not a unique one to your computer particular configuration. At least that is the way I see it.

I will also update when I this is resolved before 10.9.3 comes out who knows when.

I pity those who work in a office where they have to wait for their computer to sleep successfully before they can leave their station.

I confirmed it was not a configuration issue by downloading the full 10.9.2 installer and doing a complete wipe/fresh install onto an alternate hard drive. The problem exists immediately after the install. I included this info in my Apple Care ticket.

I suspect many folks sleep their computer, and in my case if I do that my monitor will finally sleep. However, display sleep by itself does not work. Plus, while not actually sleeping in the case of display sleep, my display does blank then, and some might mistake that for sleeping. My monitor's power consumption never goes down though, and I never see the "display signal lost" message window.

Apple contacted me and said that NEC and Apple need to communicate with each other and it seems to be a NEC firmware issue. I contacted NEC product mangage (Art Marshall) and he requested Firmware versions. Go to NEC MultiProfiler and look at the Status page. My PA 301W firmware is 1.01.04 and my friend's PA 271W also having a sleep issue is Firmware version 1.01.06. Thanks for reporting your issue so they know it is not just a limited issue for a few NEC PA monitor users.

Opened SpectraView. Got this notice.

A newer version 1.1.16.2 is available for download.
The following changes have been made in this version:

1. Compatibility fixes with Mac OS 10.9.
2. Support for the X-Rite DTP94 / MonacoOPTIX-XR has been removed. This device is no longer supported.
3. Java runtime is no longer required in order to run SpectraView II.
4. Improved calibration accuracy on PAxx2 series displays.

Going to download and see if it fixes my issue.

Anthony286,

That is the version of your software not firmware. Current software is version 1.2.00. Recommend you update it. But if you go to MultiProfiler (recommend you install it from your disc you received along with your monitor or see below so you have much more control over you monitor) and the scroll down the left side selecting the status panel.

FWIW... I tried disabling DDC in the NEC PA271W monitor setup (in monitor, Advanced settings). This did not help. DDC stands for "Display Data Connection" and it's how the computer communicates with the display (in particular during hardware calibration) but with other settings as well. You can skip DDC if you use the USB connection. Still since it doesn't help the sleep issue, that's that...

NEC Multisync PA271W won't turn off, neither when the macbook sleeps the displays, nor when I hibernate, nor when I shut down, and it began doing that (well, failing to do that) immediately after the update.

Actually, another minor bug was that I have it rotated 90 degrees, but that setting 'went away' after the update. I was easily able to set that again, and get back to work.

After a few restarts, and plenty of tinkering, it still won't put the display to sleep, anymore.

For now, yep, turn it off manually. But it's an extra step. Everything else seems to work OK.
