I tried to sign into the facetime app for the first time and it says "verifying" with the little apple loading circle going round and round and it is stuck there. I even tried a different appleid with a different email address and it still gets stuck at this point. Google is no help. Any ideas?

Tried all the other suggestions, but Heuretic's was the only one that worked. Seems to be a pretty common issue and, since this isn't a hardware issue, Apple didn't charge me for phone support.

I HAD THIS PROBLEM.NOW ITS SOLVED .!!!!
I had accidentally logged out of my FaceTime account ,when i tried logging back in it was stuck at verifying .
I contacted apple chat and they helped me out with a solution that worked .
When its stuck at verifying ,you must have still logged into your iCloud . Go to iCloud from System preferences ....logout and then login back.
Now try FaceTime .... will work like a charm .

The solution is what rcw2g gave....we need to simultaneously login to messages. Go to message>preferences and enable the apple id that you are trying to login with in facetime.
