Is there a way of Automating track volumes in finer increments of +/-0.1dB?

Logic's 127-step resolution is far too crude for fine mixing adjustments - value 1 numerical adjustments sometimes mean jumps of +0.2 or even 0.3dB!

Is there a way of increasing the resolution of Automation, at least for volume?

OK - there's no need for emailing song attachments!

THERE IS A WAY OF INPUTTING THESE INTERMEDIATE VALUES WITHOUT LOGIC CONTROL!

Many thanks to "jbmix" on the Sonikmatter site for discovering the following amazing tip:

"I just discovered that it IS possible, after all, to get 0.1dB increments using the mouse. For instance, I just wrote automation data in 0.1dB increments for the volume parameter by putting the automation mode in Latch, putting Logic in play, and adjusting with the mouse not on the fader, but on the yellow numerical readout under the Volume parameter label. It works. In fact the resolution is even better than 0.1dB.. by moving the mouse very slowly, I was able to get 10 nodes between 0.0 and +0.1. Interesting thing though is that when inspecting those nodes in the Automation Event window, between 0.0 and +0.1 all 10 nodes have the very same value = 90."

The trick now is to find a practical way of manipulating this data - I'm working on that now. It all appears in the Automation Folder as jb describes.

Yeah - you need to click on the parameters button in the event editor to reveal the actual data recorded, as the main value displayed in the event list is only a 7-bit approximation of the actual value.

I just tried your method and I do indeed get the exact same data in the automation event list as if I had recorded it in with the Logic Control.

I have not read jbmix's post, but I just tried this out. For some reason I instinctively held down OPT while I was moving the mouse, and this seemed to make the job much more predictable. Withtout OPT, you get the normal values, as if moving a fader.

Haven't figured out how to tweak the intermediate values yet tho... working on that myself.

ADDENDUM: This seemed to work for a second, but now I'm not convinced it's any different from just moving the mouse on the slider. Might have spoken (written) too soon.

Here's what I've done:

1. Written the data using the method described above
2. Opened the Automation Event List
3. Clicked on the "0011001" button to see the meta-data

As jb describes many units of meta data are used to describe a complete fade from 0.1dB to 0.2dB, so I deleted all the in-between values and moved one example of each volume level to the nearest bar.

This indeed gave me a fade that descended in 0.1dB steps at bar intervals, but there's two problems with that: firstly, without understainding the sys-ex byte, you don't know whether the value displayed as -0.1dB is -0.07 or -0.19 or whatever, and the second problem is that many of the nodes disappear from the display, meaning you'd only be able to edit them in the event list, which would be very time-consuming.

Hmm... I think the ablity to write automation data easily and with greater accuracy is now top of my wish-list for Logic 8!

This conclusion would seem to parrallel the fact the underneath the hood Logic is utilising a 32-bit engine. The channel strip display just doesn't seem to reflect it. I think it harks back to Logic's MIDI Automation engine days.

Hopefully Apple will be on top of this and bring the channel strip into line with the 32-bit (potentially 64-bit) values.
