Mac Pro does not wake up after sleep

Hi all,

my brand new MacPro does not wake up after going into sleep mode. I have various Thunderbolt and Firewire devices connected. My MacBook Pro, when connected to the same devices, can be woken up.

The MacPro is still running as I can tell from the fact that the connected HDDs are still active. I very much dislike having to push the power switch for 5+ seconds to shutdown the Mac just to restart it.

(Keyboard is BT, Mouse is LogiTech Unified Receiver (USB))

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,

HU

Step 1

Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem.

Step 2

If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select

 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility

If the checkbox at the bottom marked

Enable access for assistive devices

is checked, uncheck it and test.

If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select

 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility

If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.

Step 3

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, if any. Be sure to disconnect all USB hubs. If you use a keyboard or mouse plugged into a hub, plug the devices directly into a built-in USB port and remove the hub. Test.

Step 4

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator for this step.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for Diagnostic and Usage Messages. If you don't see that heading, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar. In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.) Select the last few messages that appear, if any, and copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

@The Hatter -

fortunately, the HDDs/volumes did not take any damage so I did not need to repair any volume. The problem seems to be related to the new MacPro, as the MacbookPro runs the same OS version and connected to the same devices just fine.

@innocentius

Normal shutdown works always fine - with or without externals. I did not test the sleep mode without external as I need those for working. Will try, but it's not a solution anyhow (and all worked fine with the MacbookPro)

@Linc Davis

Step 1 checked - but of course, the connected Thunderbolt displays shall go to sleep as well

Step 2 checked - no apps listed

Step 3 will be checked in a few minutes...

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Magically, the problem resolved itself without any (noticed) update or change in configuration. Since a few weeks, all devices wake up properly - internal as well as all external devices (Thunderbolt, Firewire and USB hard drives).

Apple called right after the initial post to ask for diagnostic information. Even though it did not solve the problem at that time, many thanks for the effort.

I never had an issue until I replaced the (far too small) Apple SSD with a 3rd party SSD, although there was also the confounding factor of the logic board having to be replaced (twice) just a week prior due to other issues. I, too, had to do the force shut down to wake it from any long sleep.

The only way I have to stop this from happening is to deselect the "Put Hard drives to sleep when possible" option in the "energy Saver" System Prefrences.

Apple just called and said they know a bunch of people are experencing the same issuue and they are trying to figure it out.

This seems to have worked for me. If thomas' response above about SSD's freezing when put to sleep is correct, this solution makes a lot of sense.

I made a separate posting but I thought it would be helpful to post my problem here too because it seems related.

Hi,

I am really frustrated because once my new Mac Pro goes into sleep mode for a while, it just doesn't wake up.

When I press keyboard to wake up, the display doesn't turn on and the computer creates loud beep sound (once every 5 seconds).

So I have to force shut down and reboot.

This is the log at this event.

8/7/14 2:42:03.923 PM powerd[16]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.sleep.failure

com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure

com.apple.message.summarize: YES

Sender_Mach_UUID: 83C854AA-0FB9-30C2-8443-D10D781E0E25

I found similar problems in the posting but those were without the beep sound.

Could anyone please help?
