Impossible to share - crashing during export "Out of RAM Memory" really slow share (Late 2013 Retina)

Hello all.

I'm really desperate. I hope you can help me:

1st) This is my project information:

on FCPX 10.1.1

User uploaded file

21 minutes. 1080p. 1.64GB file size if "sharing" at 1080p.

First, it takes AGES to share such size, so I try to export at 480p (246MB). It also takes ages, around 1h30m... But I this point I'm so desperate, that I just want to "export whatever I can, in whatever settings I can".

But even trying exporting such "low quality" version of my project, It won't export.

IT CRASHES!!!! (for the time the project share reaches the 30%)

User uploaded file

How is this possible?!!!! It's a Late 2013 Retina with 16 GB of RAM, "specially updated" for me to use FCPX without too much of a hassle. I could understand a 8GB system doing this, but a 16GB?

User uploaded file

So basically, FCPX shares SUPER-SLOW (which at this point, I don't even care) I need the video to be exported ASAP and be able to acomplish the deadline which was "today".

But it crashes all the time (when exporting) because of "lack of Memory". On a 16GB Late Retina which only has Firefox open at the time the video was being exported. (And sometimes I don't even have Firefox open, not even the WiFi is on!) And it also crashes (yep, I've tried to export the project at least 10 times!!)

- What can I do ? Why is "my memory full", is this normal ?

More info:

I have all my project/event/clips in the MAIN HDD (SSD 512GB)

Would it change something to have "all my project transfered to an External USB3 HDD?"

If yes, is there any tutorial on HOW TO transfer / backup the project and ALL files, to an external HDD?

THANKS!!

1 hour later, from when I first started to share the project (480p)

64% is shared of a total of 246MB (final file size)

Isn't this, REALLY SLOW? I only "shared" about 100mb in 1 hour

(using the USB3 drive as you guys suggested)

I don't want to imagine how much time it will take to share at 1080p... 1.65GB lol.

I'll wait here for your savant advice on what to do 🙂

Hello Luis,

After 1 hour exporting to 480p, and archiving a 69% share process (very slow)

I got, again, the same message, RAM.

I'm attaching you a capture of the error, the project where you can see the 69%, and, the Activity Monitor.

Please, what should I do? I really need the video to be shared to accomplish my deadline 😟

I'll do whatever you guys tell me to do. The problem seems to be the RAM, I guess.

I noticed that again when the crash occurred the swap space grew enormously.

Here are a few things to try:

1) Download Preference Manager and use it to trash FCP X preferences:

http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

2) Turn off background rendering (in Preferences->Playback)

3) Delete the render files: select the project in the library and choose File->Delete Project Render Files...

4) Try exporting as Master File. This will export at 1920x1080.

If after these troubleshooting steps it still fails, try exporting just a small section of the project (for example, just 2 minutes of the 21). To do this, simply set an IN point my moving the playhead and pressing the letter "I"; and analogously an OUT point by pressing "O".

So, I started exporting to 1080p, after doing what Luis said. It seems to be going a bit better.

I reach the 65% export mark, and... once again, it crashes. "The system ran out of Memory".

This is a capture of the Activity Monitor (also "frozen"), but I managed to leave it visibe while exporting the project, in order to be able to take a screen capture if it crashed again....

Again this "swap" memory being 41,38GB.........

Shall I try to even remove more space from my Maindrive? It now has 200gb free out of 500, and still giving problems.

I'm now going to try to export "only 5 minutes" of the video, as Luis said.

And hope to read another answer of you, experts.

Thanks 🙂

Now with 200GB free I don't believe that clearing more drive space will help. There is something wrong either with your system, or something corrupt in your project.

After all this, I hope you can at least export "in pieces" - maybe 5 minutes at a time - so you either succeed in exporting your story or perhaps narrow it down to find a problematic clip or effect that may be causing this much trouble.

One other thing that may work: select everything in your timeline, Copy; create a completely new project, and Paste. Sometimes, the project itself may become corrupt, and copying and pasting to a brand new project may result in cleaning up the problem.

5 minute clips do export properly. But my 21 minute project, won't export.

Things I've done:

- The project/library from my Maindrive, moved to the USB3 external one

- Pref Manager, trashed at least 5 times

- Background render: OFF

- Delete render files

- Create new library, drag USB3 Library/Project into FCPX

- Deleted space of my main drive. In the beggining of this thread, I had 111GB left. Then I deleted and ended up with 200GB free.

- Now I deleted even more, and have 250GB free out of 500.

- I repaired disk permissions (I found a thread about Memory issues where Russ H said it was good to do)

I really need this video to be exported. It's a documentary about Ukraine and I must accomplish the deadline 😟

I'll stay all night waiting for your responses, and hope to fix it "together".

Let me know if i can invite you to a beer over paypal 😀

Updated to 10.9.2 (Thanks Russ H! 😉)

Luis:

As you suggest, I now tried to "copy all the timeline" as you said. cmd+A + cmd+C

I create a new Project, and try to paste it (cmd+V) into the timeline. Nothing happens, and I get a "tuuut" beep sound. Also, going to Archive > Paste, the Paste shows up in grey, and can't click on it.

What stupid error am I doing?

Thanks!

It may not be the answer, but it certainly is a good idea. At one time I was under the impression that 10.9.1 was required to install FCPX 10.1…guess I was wrong.

I've been reading the back and forth between you and Luis this afternoon (Boston time zone) and I agree that there is something amiss with the system. But as he said, maybe it's a project-specific thing.

Of course if you copy/paste the project and it works, you'll never know whether it was a project or OS update issue.😝 Of course that would be a nice problem to have…for the sake of your deadline, I hope it works.

If, however, it doesn't, power down the Mac and restart. In Finder>Go>Go to Folder>private/var/vm. Check to see that there is only about 65 MB swap listed. Don't run any processes – including Web browsers. Launch FCPX and export and cross your fingers.
