Impossible to share - crashing during export "Out of RAM Memory" really slow share (Late 2013 Retina)

Hello all.

I'm really desperate. I hope you can help me:

1st) This is my project information:

on FCPX 10.1.1

User uploaded file

21 minutes. 1080p. 1.64GB file size if "sharing" at 1080p.

First, it takes AGES to share such size, so I try to export at 480p (246MB). It also takes ages, around 1h30m... But I this point I'm so desperate, that I just want to "export whatever I can, in whatever settings I can".

But even trying exporting such "low quality" version of my project, It won't export.

IT CRASHES!!!! (for the time the project share reaches the 30%)

User uploaded file

How is this possible?!!!! It's a Late 2013 Retina with 16 GB of RAM, "specially updated" for me to use FCPX without too much of a hassle. I could understand a 8GB system doing this, but a 16GB?

User uploaded file

So basically, FCPX shares SUPER-SLOW (which at this point, I don't even care) I need the video to be exported ASAP and be able to acomplish the deadline which was "today".

But it crashes all the time (when exporting) because of "lack of Memory". On a 16GB Late Retina which only has Firefox open at the time the video was being exported. (And sometimes I don't even have Firefox open, not even the WiFi is on!) And it also crashes (yep, I've tried to export the project at least 10 times!!)

- What can I do ? Why is "my memory full", is this normal ?

More info:

I have all my project/event/clips in the MAIN HDD (SSD 512GB)

Would it change something to have "all my project transfered to an External USB3 HDD?"

If yes, is there any tutorial on HOW TO transfer / backup the project and ALL files, to an external HDD?

THANKS!!

Hello Russ H,

I have news:

1) I have yet not copied the project into a new timeline (I will do it right away) the reason I still didn't:

- I upgraded to 10.9.2

- I shared (1080p 🙂) the first 5 minutes of my 20 minutes video (about 350mb) No problem this time.

I then thought, "hey, it might work now to export the whole video". Wrong

I had the Activity Monitor ON, the whole time the video was exporting. No firefox/safari, not even WiFi on. Just textedit (lol)

I controlled the Monitor all the time while exporting. The "Memory Pressure" reached the "red levels" (about 39,50GB of "swap memory")

15,95 of my 16GB where used... & BANG, it crashed. Same "Memory Error".

So, the project crashes always around the 60%-70% of share, because it's at that time (and after more than 1 hour to reach the 60-70% share of a 255mb project, 😐😐😢) when the Memory Pressure / RAM levels reach the ceiling of the house....

So, THIS, is the problem for sure.

Tho, I still don't understand while it works, when exporting only a 5 minute clip (the first 5 minutes), if its also a +300mb file (even bigger than the whole project export that I'm trying to make, at ridiculous 480p!!!)

Any idea of what I can do in order to, avoid having my Memory Pressure go crazy? As you can see in this screenshot, I have no big apps running (At all!)

I also ran an EtreCheck, if anybody wants to check it out and "find a problem":

I'm now trying to copy the whole project into the new project/timeline as you said Russ H.

Cross fingers (I still didn't sleep, and will not sleep until I find a solution)

In the worst scenario, I can try again to share the rest of "5 minutes clips", and then, mount them all on iMovie (lol) and export on iMovie "the 4 parts" put together.

Thanks for your help, I'll be around for the next 8hours, and will update after copy & pasting the new project.

Any feedback will be appreciated,

😉

I am still puzzled with your problem.

I can think of no reason why the memory usage should spike like that.

The symptoms are loud and clear - memory usage goes through the roof - but the cause is still mysterious.

I also don't see why you aren't being able to copy your content to a new project.

Did you succeed with the 5-minute-at-a-time exports?

If you did, at least you have an export of your movie.

But if you didn't, then maybe you can use it to close in on the issue: which of the 5-minute segments fails? there may be some corrupt clip or effect there.

I was hoping to find a message in my morning notifications that you had resolved the issue and met your deadline. (Actually, I was confident that starting the export without other open major processes would work.) But I gather that things continued not to go well. Frustrating that we haven't been able to fix this (but not as frustrating as it must be for you).

Post back with any updates.

Russ

PS: As for copy/paste, I too have found this to be very flaky on 10.1. It often takes several tries – either from the edit menu or using the keyboard shortcuts. Sometimes it requires closing and re-opening the app.
