iOS 7.1 Zooming Wallpaper with Perspective Zoom Turned Off

So, I was thrilled to see iOS 7.1 came out this morning because I had heard it would finally bring an end to the parallax wallpaper zoom problem. So, I upgraded and reset the wallpaper on my iPad making sure perspective zoom was turned off. I was sad to see that iOS was now blowing up my wallpaper for no reason. (I.e. All my wallpapers are 2048x2048, yet it is still zooming them by almost double.) I tried move and scale to shrink it, but can't get it to snap into native resolution. Has anyone else seen this or, better yet, have a solution? It is driving me nuts that, no matter what custom wallpaper I feed it at a native resolution, I keep getting a blurry mess! Thanks.

Very frustrating. They BLEW it with this one. IOS 7 was bad enough, but the workaround was to expand your landscape wallpaper with bars at the top and bottom to make it square. Then you would get the full-resolution view in landscape mode. Now they've taken that away - they refuse to make it possible to use the full resolution of the screen in landscape mode for wallpapers. This is absolutely ridiculous. They've actually written code that limits your ability to set your own wallpaper. The visual of the iPad is important to me - by taking that away, for whatever reason, I'm getting more open to alternatives than I ever thought I would be. Who tests this stuff? What's going wrong inside of Apple? Does anyone in Apple USE an iPad? Do they all use it in portrait mode 100% of the time! like a giant iPhone?

So here is the workaround for a screen with 1024x768 resolution (ipad2). Create a blank image file that is 1024 wide by 1365 tall. Cut and paste your 1024x768 (landscape) image into it. On the ipad, select that picture for wallpaper - however, this is another Apple bug - you must "set" it in portrait mode. Don't ask me why. Even though it looks right in landscape, it will zoom it after you set it there. This seems to work fine. But all of this is to work around a bizarre programming change that Apple made.

It definitely works for me when I follow this process - let me walk through it (for an iPad 2 with resolution of 1024x768):

(1) Create a blank image with a vertical resolution of 1365, and a horizontal resolution of 1024. I use Photoshop, but it shouldn't matter.

(2) Copy and paste my landscape mode picture that has a horizontal resolution of 1024 into the blank image. Save it. Now I have an image that has an aspect ratio perfect for the iPad in Portrait mode, so it won't be zoomed in. Send to the iPad.

(3) In the camera roll, select that picture for wallpaper. Turn the iPad to portrait mode. The picture SHOULD fill the screen vertically, without any zoom. In Portrait mode, SET the wallpaper. Note, if you do the SET while looking at the picture in landscape mode, it will automatically zoom, even though it doesn't LOOK like it yet.

(4) Go look at your wallpaper. In portrait mode, you have bars at the top and bottom. That's the trade off for getting the picture right in landscape mode. in landscape mode, it should be perfect.

(5) Let me know if you follow this process and it still doesn't work. I'm curious. I actually converted something like 20 of my 1024x768 pics to 1024x1365 just to overcome Apple's zoom issue, and they all work beautifully using this process.

I'll try that tomorrow. (I also have an iPad 2)

But the frustration is the exact same images were perfect, before I upgraded.

I didn't have to do anything other than select the image. It didn't matter if I took the image with the iPad camera, found it on the web, or form an external camera. It just worked.

Hey Apple, how about that as a philosophy? "It just works!"

Is ios 7.1 that bad? I'm still on 7.0. So I guess I won't be upgrading anytime soon. Also, this will be the last ipad or Apple product I buy. I'm sick of hearing about how bad a new update is. How freaking hard is it to leave stuff that works alone! Gotta change this and that! Makes it worse!

Wake up Apple! Your gonna lose loyal customers! My ipad mini updated on its own back when ios 7 came out, so I'm stuck with it. I'm so careful now when charging it...wifi off! Now the ipad 2 is discontinued. Feel sorry for people who bought one a month ago. Why didn't Apple just make the 4th ipad the budget one!? Because of the air. Nice move! Greedy! That's all.

How is the battery on 7.1? I was gonna update my ipad 2 from 7.0.6 to 7.1, I was p o that when you turn on reduce motion I lost the zooming. I like the zooming but don't like the wallpaper moving around. Can you get the zooming back w/o the parallax wallpaper? I'm really get tired of Apple releasing updates but not giving you ALL changes being made to that update. But this also may be the last update for ipad 2 because Apple discontinued it.
