GPS always on after iOS 7.1 update

I was having the same problem. I simply went to General > Settings > Background App Refresh and turned off the apps that were using my location, though I did not turn off the Background App Refresh at the top. That seems to have solved the problem without turning off location services. Hope that's helpful!

I can confirm the following on four devices after testing things out this morning: (Updated all devices to 7.1 yesterday around 1pm)

iPad Air does not replicate this problem after updating to 7.1

iPad 3rd gen does not replicate this problem after updating to 7.1

iPhone 5 on Sprint does not replicate this problem after updating to 7.1

iPhone 5 on AT&T does have the issue after the 7.1 update restart occured.

In relation to the troubled phone, these are the details I have noted. The following GPS apps are causing the arrow to stay illuminated in the task bar:

Apple Store (This app is installed on all four devices that I tested)

International SOS Travel Security App

Foap

Siri

Google search app

TravAware Travel Security App

The following GPS apps however DO NOT cause the issue and are running location services just fine in the background:

AccuWeather

Apple weather app

Apple Camera app

CNN

Facebook

Find my friends

Groupon

ATT Wirless app

Yelp

Urban Spoon

Apple Reminders app

Open table

Navigon

Apple maps

Instagram

INRIX Traffic

I have tried the following to resolve the issue but to no avail:

Restart phone

Reset phone

Deleted and reinstalled the troubled apps

Looks like this may be an issue that each app's dev must correct and then update. Or it's an issue with specific carrier phones but obviously we can't be sure yet without more input from others...

In my case, It's annoying but it does not seem to be causing any additional battery drain. I was at 100% at 9am, it's now 1pm and 93% with phone and data usage and downloading of those reinstalled apps on wifi. Seems to be on par with a normal day back on 7.0. I saw no major battery issue throughout yesterday either after updating and the problem being present.

Hope this info helps everyone with their own troubleshooting process.

I have the same problem and I went into location services and one by one i turned of the location services of apps using the GPS, for me it was Yahoo Weather. The others turned GPS of when killed.

Ok so for me going to background app refresh in general - settings and turning off Dropbox got rid of the GPS icon

I am having same issues with 4square and Google, i have iPhone 5S 32GB on ATT.

I am having the same issue on my 5s. The culprit appears to be Google Search. Once I turn off location services for this app the arrow is gone...of course that means that Google Now can't work.

I switch off the Background App Refresh and now seems like is working. But, the Reminder is use my location too (App is not running.)

I try to restart it' no help. 😟 Now I swith off the locating setup.

In my case it was definitely Foursquare and also Soundwave. It seems a few apps cause such problem after updating to iOS 7.1.

It means the solution is trying to turn off the GPS on each app until you find out which one is annoying you with the gps arrow...

For me it was the dropbox app. Sincerley hope the fix this problem soon

Same here; disabling FourSquare GPS solved the problem. I lost 8% battery power in 10 minutes just going to the parking basement!

For me switching off the Background App Refresh works as well. (4sq)

Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh -> Foursquare OFF

I want 4sq to use the gps when i've started the app, but when switched off, i don't want it to use the gps and drain the battery.

Definitely not "confirmed" as the source of the problem. I have never even downloaded Foursquare and I am experiencing the same problem.

I find my GPS IS draining my phone. 100 % this morning after charging, and 96% now in just an hour.

My Ipad Mini - non retina - is also being drained, ended the day with 19% power last night. I never gets under 40% normally.

Hope someone fixes this at apple soon.

I will continue to watch my devices.

It's annoying because I need my GPS location for some apps (that seem to be working fine) but I don't want to turn off location services for dropbox and foursquare for example everytime i use them. They've always stopped using the GPS when the app is killed, they should go back to that)

Same issue here. Oddly, Foursquare wasn't the culprit for me, it was the Apple Store App. Turned off location services for it, no more empty GPS arrow.
