Same problem with wi-fi not available on both of our 4s's - these 2 iphones were new in July of 2013. Both have problems with wi-fi not being available and only since updating to ios 7.1. Turning the wi-fi off and then on again gets it working for awhile, not a very satisfactory fix. Strange that Apple hasn't stepped up to acknowledge being aware of the issue.

Yesterday i spent a few hours contacting apple support... to be sincere they made me feel very Dissapointed about the way they handle this like if were a "consumer issue" instead of THEIR problem. In a few words they said have "nothing to do rather than send me to a service store" (of course, as the device is not longer under warranty i must pay for it).

After more than 20 years being apple's customer must say: what a shame. (...and really miss Steve)

....what would he do in this case?

APPLE TEAM (TIM) must think about it.

In my case I had a problem with the Stand-by button my iPhone 4S in July 2013 and, since it was inside Apple one year guarantee period, it was exchanged for a new one in the Apple store Munich in August 2013.

Now, after 5-6 months with the new iPhone 4S the wifi problem appeared. I have talked several times with Apple Support and tried everything they suggested: update to latest iOS, restart network settings, reset iPhone to default settings, etc. and nothing works

The final solution I got since the one-year guarantee expired: over 200€ reparation. After answering that obviously it doesn´t worth to pay 200€ reparation for a device which is having problems every x-months (in my case I could not enjoy one whole year iPhone 4S without faults), the alternative solution I got is that I should try to sell my faulty iPhone 4S in Ebay and then buy a new one...with one year guarantee of course (thanks!!).

So my conclussions are: When my faulty iPhone 4S was exchanged in the Apple Store in Munich, I got another faulty iPhone 4S. Now after 6 months Apple Support gives me no solution since the one year guarantee is over...

I am totally disgusted and disappointed with Apple Support: I will really think about to buy any new Apple product and I will try to share my experience with my friends, relatives and people I know. These are at least my complain rights.

I wish everyone better luck than me.

I have had nothing but trouble with the update! First couple of days, it was ok, then I started getting a few issues:

1. Phone started to freeze randomly, having to wait a couple of minutes to sort itself out

2. WIFI became intermittent and kept cutting out, not good when you are on a limited data contract

3. Phone then started freezing more and more, a couple of times an hour now! And sometimes it will just turn itself off! When it freezes and I want to turn it off, I have to reset it pressing the lock and home button together.

4. WIFI now has stopped working 80% of the time. WIFI logo goes black saying that it is unavailable! When I go to settings to try and turn WIFI on, screen freezes for about 30seconds and then shuts! And then, when I'm lucky, I get the privilege of an hour or so of WIFI coverage!

I have had nothing but trouble from this update. I got this 4S at Christmas so have only had it for 3 months now. Quite ridiculous considering you pay for the Apple product assuming that you are getting a premium product! Taking it into store to see what they can do, I hope not to get the same answers as some people are getting about 'burning out' etc because it sounds like complete crap!

This happened to me during a trip abroad and I was not able to use hotel wifi.
But at home we found the fix, my wifi is now working again !
Lets see, how long it lasts.
Solution, and this is not a joke:
-Place the iPhone on a soft towel or so and keep it switched on.
-Heat it with a hair dryer from the side with the earphone plug.
-After a few minutes, it warns "temperature" and turns itself off.
-Let it cool down. You then can switch it on (wifi still not working).
-Reboot now by holding home and on buttons until the Apple logo comes back.
Thats it ! My iPhone 4S straight away connected to my home wifi......and still does for a couple of days now.
I suspect, that it has something to do with the control panel. The error occured after switching wifi and flight mode from there. Currently I do only use the settings app. Can anybody confirm that ?

About the discussion if it is a hardware or a software root cause, I can provide this article from June 2013:
The computer magazine "chip", testing the beta version of iOS7.
What did they say ?
In unserem Praxis-Test etwa haben wir einen fiesen Fehler entdeckt, der die Verbindung mit einem WLAN-Netz verhindert.

Translation: "We found a nasty error, preventing to establish a wifi connection"
And they supplied the downgrade instruction and iOS6 software to fix it !!!!! (Downgrade was possible at that time from iOS7 beta without jailbreak). Does not sound like a hardware root cause.

So for me it is clearly a software issue, that has not been fixed properly since June 2013 and people out of warranty are charged for replacement hardware. Apart from the hassle.

This is the conclusion to the problem, switch to android... Or get an IPhone 5 because Apple is unprofessional... They practically stopped supporting the iPhone 4s... But the thing is... They didn't tell us anything, it's more like "f it and they will sometime notice we are done with the product, we will just make them upgrade" They should just put up something in the news feed or something telling us then slowly disabling the product . Like Microsoft did when they announced no more support for Windows XP. That's what disappoints the **** out of me with this company. Let your wallets talk and watch how fast they will listen.

This is true. Sony just did this with the DASH. While it was a flop, they still supported it but recently they disabled a key part of it that everyone used, and that was the ability to add your own internet streams instead of using shoutcast. The dash still works, but just as a clock now, and well, it's been tossed by me and several others as is soon my 4s for either a droid or windows phone. The fact that this wifi thing has gone on well over a year with no fix except UPGRADE just shows you that APPLE doesn't have the balls to say it's an EOL device.

Hi Guys!

My name is Jhon from the Philippines and I have an iphone 4s that is locked with Globe Telecom. My contract will expire November 2014. I update my phone to IOS 7.1. It worked a few days and suddenly it could no longer connect to the internet. The wifi icon is already grayed out. I already tried to reset the settings and restore it but to no avail.

I believe Globe Telecom will not do anything about it and will just send the phone to Apple Service Center and the Apple Service Center will just point me back again to Globe. This is so frustrating. I have been an iphone user for the longest time. I just want to have a statement from Apple that this issue will be fixed.

Can we be assured that there will be a fix on this? I hope that the issue is not the wifi chip being burned out.

This is so frustrating.

Regards,

Jhon Sedan

If all software trials give no fix then try the following. It will definitely fix the problem provided the logic board is not liquid damaged and it is not a software related issue.

  • Remove the logic board (Procedure available on iFixit)
  • Ideally reflow the WIFI chipset (defined on iFixit about which IC is WIFI IC) to 200deg C.
  • Reflow will fix the problem, be careful as if the temperature ramps up too high it can kill the WIFI chipset.
  • I have done this on hundreds of boards and it works just fine, but needs extra care so do read a bit more about the reflowing the board. Another safe option can be reflow in baking oven (not microwave) at 200Deg C for 5-10 minutes.
  • This procedure is risky but all it does is rejoins the lost WIFI IC contacts to the board.

Kind Regards
