iOS 7.1 Random Reboots

So, according to all the reports, iOS 7.1 is meant to fix the white/black screen reboots. Well, HUGE fail. Ever since I upgraded from iOS 6 to iOS 7, I''ve had reboots, including during a couple of phone calls.

Now, with iOS 7.1, they continue. It would happen far too frequently and with very few identifiable common traits to each one. Even my iPad 2 has crashed a few times under 7.1.

I could be on the task screen to close an app and it would crash, or it would stall for 30 seconds, then crash, or I'd open an app and it'd crash. Or it'd just crash when I flipped between home screens. Since I upgraded to iOS 7.1, it has done it about 30 or 40 times.

So, some places on the internet suggested a wipe, iOS reinstall then restore. So, I've been doing that. It rebooted 5 times during the iOS install, then started restoring the images, apps, etc. and rebooted every minute for about 30 minutes, installing 1 or 2 apps at a time, then crash, reboot, another couple of apps, crash, reboot, etc. etc.

I'm still restoring and it's been stable for 20 minutes so far, but I'm not holding my breath.

DEAR APPLE...FIX THIS! PROPERLY! You have effectively made my iPhone 4S unusable 'cos I can't trust it not to reboot when I need it... I was going to upgrade to a 5S and give my 4S to my mother (she currently has my old 3GS) but how can I when it's so unreliably trash.

COME ON, PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF SANITY, FIX IT PROPERLY.

Spend two years convincing my wife (59) to chose an Ipad 2 for her daily mail and Facebook activities, and now she has been one of the true beliver for more than two years.

Updates has been installed app. 14 days after release and always witout problems BUT this Sunday all here unwillingness against Apple came back in less than 10 minuttes.

Since updating from 7.0 to 7.1 it now resets randomly - and even more frustrating it now starts a reboot if it has been in sleep mode for more than 2 minuttes showing the black screen and a white Apple logo.

How on earths is it possible to loose a satisfied customer in less then 10 minuttes - I'm writing this while she's at the store to by a Samsung tablet 😟

PS

My Ipad 3 with Retina is working perfect and I'll keep it until it starts to fail also.

Hello - i am in the same store as your wife buying a Samsung aswell !

My advice is to reset her Ipad Mini and sell it on Ebay to some other victim - let them deal with Apple - not you. We are too old to deal with Apple's excuses:- "over 1 year old? Sorry = hardware problem" (not that they can tell you what part of the hardware has failed. Apple fell from the top to the bottom for me in the last 7 days. Their arrogance is incredible.

Can we stop the "Drop Apple, buy Android" stuff please?

I started this thread for help with a problem with my iOS devices. If your only help is to suggest buying another brand, please go elsewhere, you're not helping.

Yes, Apple has screwed up with this. Yes, Apple will lose customers. But for now, I'm remaining with Apple and just want to fix my iPhone and iPad.

Sound fair?

Thanks.

I did what you suggested, turning off the "today view" items in the notification centre.

The reboots have stopped, so far. So I went to turn them back on to see, and the option for "calendar day view" has totally vanished. It's not there at all anymore…BUT the resprings appear to have stopped so far.

This is very odd. Where did the setting go?

Mar 18, 2014 3:58 PM in response to gfindlay

And after a manual home/sleep reboot, "calendar day view" option reappears.

There's definitely something funky going on here.

I'm thinking some weird memory screw up, cos the setting doesn't vanish till after the phone has been used for a while. Could be the springboard running out of memory.

That's one thing that's had me irritated for a while…memory management on iOS is awful. It just seems to be a case of "If your app runs out of memory, just crash." There REALLY needs to be something done to better manage it!

Pleased to report that my Ipad Mini is fixed now

I went back to Apple Genius Bar in Marbella, Spain and insisted they check the integrity of the memory chips. They found that the memory chips are corrupted and have "bad sectors", sit on the motherboard and they will have to replace everything. 😟.

The "genius" said the following:-

"Maybe there has been a bad lot of chips gone out. (no, sorry - I said that not him 😉 - he neither confirmed nor denied). Maybe the recent 7.1 update you downloaded was stored on a different part of the SSD memory to the previous install of 7.0.4. Maybe it is installed on a sector that is corrupted. Or maybe the IOS has never tried to access that sector before with previous updates (prior to IOS7.1) and every time IOS 7.1 tries to access that bad sector, it reboots".

(and "MAYBE" IOS7.1 is a lot suspect but you aint saying? 😉)

So, long story short, we have a 2 year guarantee here in Europe nowadays IF you buy from an Apple Store. If you do not then it is 1 year max. I did not. I bought it 15 months ago from an individual on the Swiss equivalent of Ebay = Riccardo.ch. However, he had bought it from Apple Store Zurich (they can get all that from your Serial number). So they gave me a new Ipad Mini - with a guarantee that lasts another 9 months (2 years minus 15 months) - "We dont want you to have this bad problem any more so here is a new Ipad"

Wow! says I - Muchas Gracias!

So, I am very impressed with Apple now and I take it ALLLLLLLLLLLLL back (to **** with Samsung 🙂 - too many models anyway...)

Moral of the story - go and get Apple to check the integrity of your memory chips, even on your iphones - i feel sure they know about this ....... 😉

It might work, it might not. It worked for me

Guess what? I will never upgrade ever again. It's only to protect their *** anyway re hacking. Been messing with PCs since 1981 and i have NEVER had a virus nor a hack nor nowt - that's why Peter Norton is very rich. Everything gets sold by fear.

But my main motto now is this:-

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

best of luck

Glad to hear you got sorted out.

I've had an odd turn of events with my 4S. After my previous report regarding the notification centre and daily list, I've had a bit of joy with mine.

After I did all the tweaks in my previous message, I've had one reboot, more than 24hrs after I did the tweaks, but nothing since that. The issue is definitely memory based and I've seen weird behaviour like entries in the settings appearing and disappearing at random.

Hopefully Apple will release a fix for weird memory behaviour soon.

I am pleased it is not bugging you as much as before. In truth before i replaced the Ipad Mini for a new one, i disabled everything in Notifications view re the Calendar-view and had a tenth of the reboots than i had before.

However I am not sure whether Masav's idea is the real fix but at least it bothered me less.

I am however, sorry to note that in taking delivery of a new ipad, i PRESUMED that IOS7.1 was on it aswell but it is not - it is 7.0.4

So therefore as i wont upgrade, I will monitor this site to see whether it gets fixed and then wait a year, and think about it very hard.

🙂

Really do advise getting the internals of your device checked though

Hillbillies, you seem to be downplaying is supposed to be the "Greatest" benefit of ALL devices, they just work. If they have problems, they are EASY to fix. All the steps to troubleshoot that you are and are not listing are not simple for 98%+ Average Apple Purchaser. Seems strange to me when Apple controls ALL Hardware, O/S and software with an Iron Fist, that this should be simple.

I have an iPad with Retina, 128GBP memory & cellular that has been rebooting EVERY FEW MINUTES (300+ Times a day) since trying to update to ios 7.0.4. Because of the constant reboots, I am NEVER able to get to any kind of Login screen or try to do a Restore from any backup... I can do a Reset, but then it continues the Constant Rebooting. I have Always performed ALL updates when available since ios 6 and I have not had any problems until ios 7.0.4.

Any thoughts?

Here are 2 suggestions:-

1) take your Ipad and Iphone to an Apple Store and ask the Genius bar to check the memory modules - see my post further up.

2) Perhaps not to be so quick to upgrade to the next IOS without checking on the web for problems?!

What is interesting is that you are trying to upgrade to 7.0.4 not 7.1 but you are STILL having problems. That's why i reckon it might be your hardware at fault on both devices.... I think Apple know about this and you might get a renewal.
