Iphone 5s battery drains fast after ios 7.1 update.

Am I the only one who seems to be experiencing this? My iphone 5S battery seem to drain much faster than usual, and charge longer. I heard that the new update is supposed to increase battery life, and read comparison threads regarding other iphones that are capable of a much better battery life than mine.

I've had my phone for 3 months, never have dropped it once or anything of the sort, if that matters. My battery drains to 50% within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percents when on standby for 5 hours or so. Is this normal? Is it perhaps due to the fact that I am mostly using 3g, and applications that require more processing such as tumblr (graphics and gifs) as well safari? I'm just worried that my battery may be draining to quick, despite the update which's supposed to make it much better according to many people.

Thanks.

I've done everything but reset my phone to factory settings and set it up as a new one.

Last weekend was the worse. When I took my phone off the charger, I made sure that all the apps were closed. I didn't use it at all for 90 minutes. When I checked the phone it was at 54%, but I hadn't used it at all. When I checked the Usage, it showed Usage 34 minutes, Standby 1 hour, 37 minutes.

My phone went completely dead after 4 hours and 45 minutes. Despite what the usage said, I only actually used it for about 20 minutes total during that time to check email and texts.

What is sad is that no one knows why this happens...i would much rather someone at apple tech just say it is a hardware issue and we know why it does this. All this mystery around a piece of electronic gear is totally baffling. You go to the genius bar and they have zero clue...."oh, turn your brightness down" I say, " you dont understand, i had the same brightness for the previous 1.5 years with no problem...then they say...OK, but "you should turn the brightness down, that is what i am seeing"...OMG...idiots!! they do not listen!

Basically, ds3lc has it right. The problem is, if I may borrow his word, "slime" running in the background, as is now possible with iOS 7.1 and 7.1.1. Apps like (to pick one purely at random) Facebook, can now chatter away in the background without you knowing it. This eats up battery life and data allowances. My wife, who has no Wi-Fi at work, ran up a huge cellphone bill this way, as well as finding her battery dead by four o'clock, despite the iPhone being fast asleep in her handbag.

Others, including ds3lc. have described the remedies in detail, so I won't repeat them. Basically, it's about restricting access to resources only to active apps that really need them, and setting Restrictions to stop iOS from resetting that access. Probably best to check that iOS 7.1.2 doesn't reset those restrictions, too. Apple seems to like that slime getting into your phone - I wonder why?

Apple is lying through its teeth about these problems. They are software, and they have nothing to do with "consumed batteries" despite what the geniuses* might say. Still. it makes a few dollars for Apple, so that's OK - isn't it?

* geniuses 😁 😁 😁 - by the way, what on earth is a consumed battery - do bugs get in there and eat them?

while ds3lc may have it right for his instance and others, that can't be my case if i did a complete reinstall NOT from a back up and had the drain right away before adding any of my apps. Only the apps that came with it were installed. That also would not expain, or would it, why the phone gets hot sometimes, and not othes. Very strange. I read one place that someone took their phone to a repair shop in another country and it was some hardware controller that was the culprit. NO one ever says that...since that is not something apple can repair.

It would certainly explain why the phone gets hot, as it does when it's working intensively. As to whether it happens for a complete reinstall, it rather depends on what the native apps are doing and the environment in which it's working.

For, example, it's been suggested that the clock goes berserk trying to find a time signal when there's no available Wi-Fi signal...

it could also be that u dont fully charge ur phone to max and use it to 20%? updates dont necasarily increse battery life, they shrink other apps battery usage down. also double tap home button for multi tasking, and see how many apps u have running. that could make a significant drain. Iphones also find app updates and al that stuff even when neutral, so turn off ur phone when ur not always using it

~hope it helped somehow

with all due respect, this is exactly the tips i am talking about if you read through this chain...that everyone knows about...obviously i know about swiping up the open apps, I have gone through every possible fix there is...none work, even with a new battery.... it is either a sofware or hardware issue, period. For example today I had 100% and it went to 25%. Guess what the Usage showed

Usage 1 hour 14 minutes

Stand by 1 hour 50 minutes.

nothing running...few emails and two short calls....

There are two problems categories that cause battery drain:

1- Apps, location service, background refresh and anything that is related to the use of the phone. This problem can greatly be improved by tweaks published in hundreds of sites. However there is the second category:

2- Power drain during stand by (my case). The phone would use up to 6% battery /hour being totally empty with no bluetooth, apps, wifi or location services. This totally unjustified power consumprion can't be influenced by the user. It seems not all Iphones have the issue. I came across a web site that mentioned that 5S's upgraded from IOS 6 are affected while those delivered our of the box with IOS 7 are not.

The issue is many months old and it seems to be too big or costly for Apple to tsolve it. My guess is they decided to leave users of those affected phones out in the rain and just treat them as they are dumm or delusional. As my phone was rather new I was lucky they finnaly decided to replace it for a new one, given my insistence. The new one is on 7.0.6 and runs like a champ. Maximum 1% drain during the whle night and go to bed with 70% battery left. Will never upgrade unless the issue is clarified which I doubt.

Wish you all good luck!

Here is the thing, I am sure they know about it and just don't care. Apple sold 44 million Iphones according to their 2014 Q2 results. That is jus one quarter.....on this forum and others there are perhaps a few hundred people complaining about this issue...do we really think they give a s**t? Think about what they must be saying in their meetings..."ah that is a super small percentage of phones with issues, the heck with it". I mean, think about how many phones they sell!! Why care?

Iphone 5s 16gb (purchased from Apple Online U.K. on 8th December 2013) was fine until the last two days onwards. I am now getting incredibly quick battery drain. The image is a screenshot taken this morning. Phone was charged to 100% last night and used for an hour or so, with battery level on 50%. I then switched off overnight as I always do.

Turned it back on again this morning and was at 48%!

Now look at it. Do I have a case here for a replacement phone?

P.S. Location services, bluetooth etc all off as they always are. Nothing has changed at all in my usage habits with the phone.
